they are inexpensive
some types of paint will melt the coating on the drainer you should use enamel and i would think it will not stick too good. if you paint it be sure to allow it to dry over night.
I would just throw the dish drainer away and buy a new one. The paint won't stick since there will be so much moisture. If you attempt to paint it, remove the coating from it, then paint it with a metal primer/sealer so it won't rust. Following, use a metal paint.
NO NO - UNLES THE paint is "non lead" paint.
This question has two components--can you spray paint the dish drainer with a regular spray paint for metal? The answer to this question is a definite yes. Is it safe, because hot food will obviously react with the paint? I don't know if there was ever made a conclusive study on the long term effects? So it is up to you. If you like to keep the piece, you can paint it anyway and use for something else not coming in touch with food--part of a flower arrangement perhaps? Good luck!
just get a new one there cheap.
The paint will peel off in no time at all. This applies both if it is a metal drainer, or a plastic coated one. Can`t you get an identical one ? Surely there is a manufactures name on it, you could write to them and ask for your nearest stockist, if you like it so much. But honestly, I would not chance getting flakes of paint on your dishes or in your food.
We had a dish drainer which was coated in white PVC, and had started to split in various places, I took it to the local (Edinburgh) Blindcraft workshops and they stripped it and dipped it in pvc or nylon and it's still good 3-4 years later. I wouldn't waste time trying to paint it, it will only last for a few days.
