I work at a school in rural area. The water supply appears to be eating away the copper pipes. What causes this?
Is there a treatment to stop this.It is damaging the fittings and the pipework is getting thin.
Answers:
If the pipes are in contact with soil, then the soil is acidic.
If the pipes are being corroded from within then it is the water supply., if that is the case then you must replace the copper with new type plastic which has the same diameter and is interchangable with standard compression fittings, or use their special plastic fittings which are better.
In rare cases you may have galvanic corrosion caused by a bad earthing system,in which case you need the help of a fully competent electrician familiar with this rare problem.
I only ever had one case of this happening, so check it out.
The water is acid. There's not much you can do about this. Adding chalk isn't going to help the pipework. The best thing is to replace it all with plastic.
Is there a fitting near this that is a different metal, - and is it eating or just building up Lime deposit- maybe you need a Water Softner. To remove some of the minerals. Nothing in the water should eat or desolve Copper, have it tested.
If you have a Galvanized fitting in contact with Copper, it will eat the Copper, they make a special coupler to deal with it.
One thing to look for is if during any construction the pipe was used a an electrical ground. If there are electrical wires connected to the pipe at any point this will begin a process known as electrolysis. Depending on the amount of current passing through the pipe to ground, deterioration can be swift. One of the indications is if you look inside the pipe and see fisures runing lenghtwized. Another test is to have a contractor measure the amount of current in the pipe. Solution is to remove the electrical connections and replace the pipe.
probably lime in the water and soil
The pipes need to be treated with an Inhibiter and a ph leveller. Water samples should be taken and tested for "Nitrites" There are many companies who will do this for you. Check pool maintenance companies, they will have the resources!
I have Acidic water and it will indeed eat copper piping over time. If it's low PH then you will need a PH neutralizer to raise it.
letsee had the right answer sounds like electrolisis...just ground the building with rods
