How do i mix and use lime mortar ?
I've been told to use hydraulic lime, the stuff that goes off in water. However i cannot find this locally ( north Shropshire ) and all the builders merchant say use hydrated lime.
Also, old lime mixed have bits in them, I was told of something else to add to the mix to give this effect but cannot remember the name, any ideas ? It would look like bits of flint or shells when the mortar is brushed after its almost dry.
Any advice on if I can use hydrated lime, and what mix to use.
I'm repointing a 16 century wall so wanted to use a lime mix, not a modern mortar mix.
The wall is ready, i've raked out the modern mortar and exposed the very old lime mix about 30mm into the wall - its breathed a sigh of relief.
