Insulation above my kitchen?

When I replaced the ceiling in my kitchen I removed all the fibreglass insulation. I fitted recessed lights into the ceiling and was told not to put insulation over the fittings in the roof space as it would be a fire hazzard ? I only put a little of the insulation round the edge of the roof space. What can I do to insulate the roof as the kitchen is now a very cold place ?

I think the advice may have been given in good heart but somewhat misplaced . You could have just left the area the spotlights devoid of insulation. Its the heat from the lights that may present a fire hazard- providing you have a good electrical installation. If the kitchen is a flat roofed extension you may have difficulty in resolving this. If its a bungalow and you have immediate access to the roof I would suggest you re-lay the insulation (200mm thick for current building regs -UK) Leaving 150mm clear around the light fittings. Don't forget to lay the electric cables on top of the insulation as they need to dissipate heat as well. I usually go up a size on cable where there is insulation for this reason. Hope this helps
celing light 3 inches no insulation. i cant find where in the book i'm reading i read that. you could ask your city inspector if putting "fire resistant putty" around the fixture would be up to code in your city. unless the lights already have insulation built in.
You were right not to put fibreglass around the light fittings,. You could have put fibreglass in the void but left a 200mm space around the lights.

You can buy foil pocketed sheeting. It comes on a roll, about 15mm think and has the same thermal insulation rating of 12 inches of glass fibre. When you see the stuff you think it can't possibly work but it does, we use it on our extensions.

Ask in a builders mechant ( not a DIY shop ) and see what they've got.

Some council regions have yet to approve it for building regs, the independent tests are still awaiting results. If you don't care about the regs, i'd get this foil stuff, it so easy to cut ( knife, scissors), great thermal properties, and much cleaner/safer than glassfibre.
