Painting really isn't too hard. I think it is actually fun and it doesn't have to be perfect to look good.
If you are set on not using paint, then you might as well be creative: make a collage, use contact paper, decals and stickers, fabric and spray glue etc.
You can go to a Sign Manufacture and they have a vinyl machine to make the outside of signs and they could make something for you. It is the same stuff some Auto body shops use it is called body wrap.
