Does anyone know the best way of taking a cutting of a grape vine?
Should I leave the stem in water to root? or should I dip it in a rooting hormone powder then plant in a pot? or should I be approaching this in an entirely different way? The cutting I have is 12" long and was taken just below a joint.
Answers:
The cuttings should be of dormant ripened wood (in other words, taken in the winter) and should have 3 buds below the soil. Plant several to a pot in a sandy compost mix. You can use a hormone rooting powder to encourage rooting.
Use hormone rooting powder to get it to root and put it in a pot of soil. Another way is to take a grape vine, cut it, then put rooting hormon in the cut and plant the cut in the ground. The vine is still attached to the main vine. This makes the vine almost like a runner on a strawberry plant. You can use a tooth pick to keep the cut open or fill it with pete moss.
