Raleigh Chipper CBR 900 will it work?
My good friend Ravi & Graduate of Punjabi University now living in Sandwell West Midlands has connected an engine out of a CBR 900 Fire Blade to a Raleigh Chipper bicycle.
Ravi needs to know what speed he should expect to obtain & will he have to wear a crash helmet as he's planning on testing it down the Oldbury road this evening?
He's connected the throttlle linkage to the handlebars and drive direct to the rear sprocket!
Any help would be appreciated as Ravi may of hit upon an alternative to a Motorbike?
Answers:
What a great idea, pity he could not get one of the later 1000cc engines for the extra sophistaction, smoothness of power delivery and torque, but the 900`s rawness should suit the old fashioned charm of the Chipper.
If he is using the standard Honda gearbox from the `blade and the 16th tooth Raleigh pressed tin rear sprocket that came with the Chipper, after a bit of calculator bashing I have come up with a theoritical top speed of approximately 207.9774532761997634 MPH ! More than adequate for the Sandwell-Oldbury run I am sure you will agree.
I think the standard Raleigh side-pull front brake should be perfectly OK such a light machine will stop on a pre-decimal sixpence, that is half a 5p ! Not far at all,so tell Ravi not to worry too much about stopping, but, alas a helmet will be needed for legal reasons.
Check out the insurance side of things too as bicycles do not need insurance and you can damage who or what you like and just laugh about it later in the pub.
I am a bit worried about tyres though, that old rear may not be up to cornering speeds up in the high190`s. So pop into Halfords and see if there is a beefier tyre available, you should get a good one for about a tenner or so.
My old Grandad once put a Vincent Black Shadow engine in a Butchers delivery bike, just popped the thing in the basket, drove the front wheel off the flywheel and used the palms of his hands over the carburettor inlets to control speed and accelleration.
It worked a treat until he lost control in the High Street one saturday afternoon and slashed his way through the local Baptist Scout Troup who were out an a route march, killed 23 of the little blighters ! He only got a clip around the ear from the local bobby, luckily for him the Chief Constable was a Methodist.
It was so funny to hear the words of that bobby as he picked old grandad up " are you OK my Worshipful Master ?" he enquired as he gave grandad a hearty handshake.
Gosh, they don`t make `em like that anymore do they ?
Oh, I have digressed, sorry, wish your mate Ravi all the best I am sure you will all have great fun and in years to come you will have many tales to tell of his brave exploits on the Sandwell to Oldbbury run.Is there an epoxy floor coating I can apply to a concrete floor which has no DPC & gets damp occasionally.?
