What are the basic dimension rules for a stud wall?

will be approx six feet wide, ten feet tall. i believe it's 16 inch centres on the uprights, but how often to i put noggins between the uprights ? Also it's basically to build out, by around 10 inches, an "alcove" so what's the best method of fixing it such that i can use he existing solid wall behind as strength - do i just put in noggins front to back so to speak ? or will it be fine on its own.

am i right in thinking you are creating a kind of false chimeney breast with an alcove/s beside?
You can use 4*2 studs at 600mm centres with 12mm plasterboard or 3*2 at 400centres using 9mm plasterboard. if u want to strengthen it from the original wall you can fix a piece of timber, say 300mm long to the wall and put a noggin from stud wall to fixed timber, a couple should suffice, i dont htink i'd worry too much about that though. You say the wall is 3m high so put a row of noggins at 2.4m(the height of the plasterboard) from the floor to pick up the top join. You dont need any other noggins in a wall like this. Screw your plasterboard with drywall screws at 8" - 10" apart, around the perimeter of the board and where the studs are also. Have fun!
16" centers is correct. If you are placing this wall next to an existing wall, simply brace off of it for sturdyness in the middle of the wall vertically and every 4' horizontally. Noggins?
if this wall is non-structural (it doesn't support anything but itself), 24" centers are more than adequate. if you fix the top bottom and both sides to other structure there isn't any reason to attach it to the wall behind either. BTW why would you want to throw away 8 sq ft of your space by building this wall?
ask the builder
