Can mdf board be used for a fishtank stand?

I built a stand out of 2x4's and put a piece of mdf on top, would I need to place something over the mdf or will the board not be a big problem? Would a little bit of water here and there cause a lot of problems?

i would recommend some bracing underneath..it will sag..and then you may have a collapse on your hands..and a paddling pool in the room..and NOT USING MDF..thick sheet of marine ply varnished should do better.but still with bracing..
I would give the MDF a coat of paint or deck varnish.
As long as it doesnt get too wet it should be ok, you can also put thin polystyrene tiles under the tank, this helps to level it once filled.
should be fine as long as the base of the tank is actually supported by the 2x4's. Tanks can get pretty heavy and if the MDF get wet it can break and that wouldnt be a very pretty site.
Yes, definitely agree with dean on the polystyrene tiles, it'll protect tank if it's not on a perfectly level surface.
MDF is JUNK! Don't ruin your project by using MDF.

Go ahead and get 3/4" plywood. Much stronger and much more durable under stress.....Water will not affect it like it will MDF.
no mdf is not strong enough to hold a fish tank and it would also in time rot with the water
you'll have to use a stronger and more resistant wood
Fish tanks are very VERY heavy, if the board isnt thick enough you will loose the bottom of the tank.

a little bit of water will add up and rot the board
You should coat the mdf with a sealant specially if you are heating the fish tank.
Dean is right all you need is a thin layer of polystyrene to even out any tiny irregularities or bumps in the base so that the glass is not stressed and ends up cracking with the weight when its full

Given that its bound to get a bit wet when you empty it too I'd seal the MDF too with a drop of spirit based paint
if mdf gets wet it will expand until it eventualy disintergrates
What are you saving, like five bucks with MDF? Plywood is the way to go; treat it with polyurethane and it will be strong for years. The MDF is just a big sponge and will not last.

Some goofball made my old garage door out of MDF; after the mushrooms started to grow on it I replaced it with plywood.
as long as it doesnt get to wet it should be fine.
You absolutely must paint every surface (top, bottom and all 4 sides) of the mdf with YACHT VARNISH, if mdf gets wet it will dissolve. If yacht varnish is good enough for a year at sea, it's good enough for a fish tank.

Also, make sure that the mdf is the thickest you can buy to support the weight.

The idea of the polystyrene tiles is very good, but the strength of the mdf is most important, remember a full fish tank is extremely heavy.
water proof it first
