Why do we have skirting boards?...What are they for anyway?

Answers:
skirting boards are a traditional and functional.
The reason why they are used is simple, its because there is a tendency for the joint between the vertical wall and the horizontal floor to look messy.. Fixing a skirting board is a way of tidying up the joint and adding aesthetic value
so spiders can run along them and hide in them
because they're easier to keep clean from scuff marks and they protect the wall rom furniture? not sure but think they're not bad reasons
Protect the decor from your feet/shoes

Also acts as a finish
to try and keep some of the spiders in the walls apart from the clever bastards who find the way out!
Very annoying especially after spending the last two evenings painting them! Hate painting
Collecting dust mainly.
Providing hidey places for spiders etc. Plus of course Jerry would be homeless without them!
to keep the dust from escaping from inner cavity walls. the wall doesn't go all the way down to the floor. you can also hide cables behind them
To stop the hoover from damaging the plaster and paint work, you just ram it around and it'll bounce right off :D

Actually it's probably just a style thing to cover up the end of the plaster work and the beginning of the floor boards.
They r to cover up the ends which can be unsightly. It is also easier to cover up vertically than horizontally.
I reckon they should be a bit bigger and made of plastic or wood that could be clipped off easily, then we could hide all our wires behind them.
What a dull question!

I think they're to tidy up the finish so you're not left with a gap where the wall joins the floor.

Also, I think they are to stop dust, dirt etc. from falling into the gap so you can clean it up instead.
It's a builders/designers way of hiding any unevenness between the walls and the floor.
To stop the little people from coming up from under the floorboards.
its a decorative fetcher as is the coving
and also covers up the unevenness of the floor where it meets the wall
the coving is wall and ceiling
