erm i think you should take the house you have been offered but don't take your name off the housing list, then just live in that house until you have enough money to decide your next step. who cares if its badly conditioned you have your son with you that's all that matters. family can visit, might help to make the break actually.

I would take the bigger flat not just for the size but for the safety but would you feel comfortable doing that?
you need to go over to the area of the new flat at night. compare levels of anxiousness felt at your current place, and in that neighborhood at night.
can you not try some housing associations or try for a privately rented place?
If the other flat is in poor condition, ask the council to do any necessary repairs and ask for a voucher towards the cost of redecorating. There may even be grants available in your area. As for distance, well your family and friends can visit after all. You can phone and email to keep in touch daily. It's only the other side of town after all. My son lives 50 miles away and I still manage to see him regularly and we phone and email almost daily. I don't feel I'm out of touch with him.
That's a really tough one there and I'm not sure I have a perfect answer at all.either way you're going to have to come to terms with your anxiety though and quit being afraid to live wherever that might be.I really do wish you the best.~huggers~

ok, so you were assaulted, so they are going to re-assign you to a place that is in a worse side of town? that doesn't make much sense at all. and then you have to fix up the place yourself? but your renting? this doesn't make any sense. ok, so if your place now is in a better part of town, i would keep that one & just try to make it safer. otherwise, i wouldn't take one that is in a worse neighborhood! unless your attacker was someone you knew and they might come back?
sorry you are going through this. i commend you for taking action. i also suggest taking any counseling for you and your son that you can get. it can really help you to deal with such a horrible situation.
I would take it. cross town really isn't that far. I live across town from my family (in a fairly large city) and I still visit almost every day. If it's allowed, get a dog as a crme deterrent. Doesn't ahve to me mean, just has to be a dog that'll eaither scare them off with their looks or bark like mad when someone comes. Personally, I'd feel safer in a rough neighborhood than in a household where I've been assaulted. You'll get the place fixed up in time, and the air conditioner really isn't a big deal ths time of year (I would imagine, at least, depending on where you live.)
