How can i lengthen the life of my now rather battered and saggy soft leather bag in an inexpensive way?
It's 18 months old and has been carried around london every day of it's life. Now rather shiny and dark on the back and the front is getting a bit dry and scuffed and the leather is stiffer and lighter in colour than it was. I'd rather not pay a lot to have it dry cleaned/conditioned. Is there anything in hte house I can use? I've heard that you can use body lotion?
Answers:
There are lots of car cleaning products for use on leather upoholstry that would work, or try a shoe repair place they have similar leather feed & clean products.
one of the best products that i have used is saddle soap.it not only cleans but it conditions the leather and makes it soft and supple.
Polish it.
jitterbug is right, saddle soap works wonders on old worn leather.
I would not use body cream as that may rub off on your clothing.
You could try a little olive oil - it will nourish the leather and bring out a shine - plus it's all natural (and if you get a little on your hands it will be a fantastic hand cream!).
Someone once told me to rub Vaseline into a soft leather bag to keep it supple and prolong its life. I didnt do it but you could always try. Think I'd give the saddle soap a go first though.
If it's real leather, get some saddle soap.
