How do I remove rug adhesive from a carpet?

I used an adhesive tape to stick a rug which kept "creeping" onto a hall carpet. I have now discarded the rug but the adhesive is very visible and stuck fast to the carpet!

Try goo gone. I would use the citrus scented one as opposed to the regular scent! (Unless you despise citrus scent.) The regular smells extremely toxic to me! And it lasts a while!
