Why does my grass seem like the colour of hay in patches even though the rain waters it a lot?

Answers:
may be tree roots under it drinking all the moisture, or maybe it is too dry and hard to absorb the rain so it runs into hollows and waters them.
get some grass feed, thats got the nutrients your grass needs
you may think it's watering it alot but depending on where you live and what kind of "soil" you have, it might not be getting enough water. It also might be a bad patch. You might have to dig up the spot completely and in the fall add a bag of soil and re-plant some grass seed..
It needs virtualizer
Because in the summer the water doesn't sink into the ground as much, most of it evaporates.
You need to feed the lawn, your local garden store will suggest something to revive it.
What rain?
Have you seen a lot of japanese beetles in your area? If you have, there's a good chance that their larvae are feeding on your lawn.
some types of grass do turn yellow.
but maybe too there maybe worms in your grass that is killing the grass roots..
you may need to treat the grass
call a professional in land scape's and get their advise
You might be able to revive it. Get your garden fork and push it into the ground every few inches to make drainage holes about 3" deep. Mix some compost with some growmore pellets, and brush it into the holes. Then water it well, add some plant feed to the water. You might see some new growth come through in a couple of weeks, if the roots are still alive.
I know it sounds daft making drainage holes when the ground is hard and dry, but part of the problem is that the water is sitting on the surface and a lot of it will evaporate.
You may have cinch bug. Even though I believe in organic gardening, you may need to check with a lawn care company about pesticide use--this is a nasty!
Are there any large dogs that that come around and pee on it? This will cause that to happen. It kills the Grass. People just don't care sometimes. If you think this could be the problem..... buy some ground Cayenne pepper and spread it around your yard.

If you have a 99 cent store around, you can get a 16 oz bottle for 99 cents. That's what I did.

Good Luck
