There are lots of products people say work for stain removal but every time you try one and your not successful that stain is working it's way into your carpet, and depending what it is it could dye the colour permanently, safest thing to do with stains is to absorb up what you can without rubbing it in to your carpet and place a damp towel over it to keep it from drying and setting into your carpet. Then try and extract it out with a steam machine and spot remover for that type of stain, or call in a professional in to do a spot removal. This is your safest way to save your carpet and prevent permanent damage. Home remedies may work on some stains but unless you now what reacts best with what has been spilt I would play it safe and call someone in before I started testing different formula's. Hope it's not permanently damaged. Good Luck
