Will fertiliser be washed through a sandy soil to lower levels?

A month ago when I noticed my Leylandi hedge was starting to turn yellow in places I reluctantly decided to give it a liquid general NPK fertiliser thinking it was lacking some nutrients. I spoke to an expert a few days later however & it turned out it was far more likely it was turning yellow through lack of water.
Now the bloody things started growing like a triffid and its also started raining a lot recently.
I'm wondering if the fertiliser (and specifically the Nitrogen) which I foolishly put on it a month ago is still within reach of it's roots, or will it have been washed through the sandy soil to lower levels/degraded by now? Perhaps the rush of growth is equally attributable to the recent ideal bright but wet weather conditions?

Unfortunately you have just discovered the best way to fertilise long/deep rooted plants. The day after the fertiliser is applied the plant should be watered thoroughly to ensure even and deep enough penetration of the water and fertiliser mix, this will also regenerate any plants in the surrounding area.In general Leylandi can live in poor soil but if you do find the need to feed your leylandi try spraying the foliage instead.
Probably a combination of both. However, I've noticed increased vegetation(seaweed) in lakes where fertilizer is used on surrounding lawns. Why would this be any different?
Yep, in fact I have just read that grass is growing in the deserts of Australia, now I know why.
