Where does the term "rag and bone" as the old rag and bone man come from? From which era in history?
My mate says its from the black death times, i disagree, i think it was just poor people getting scrap and selling it, bones going for glue, rags for cloth etc

Rags were used for re-cycleing in the days when they were mostly of cotton or wool,scrap iron was taken,also old bones for glue,kids were given in exchange for the rags a ball or a goldfish(take your own jar) the ragman's cry was "Rag,bone,any old rags?".Up north, where I am,our Mothers used to get "donkey stones " white or cream,for dressing the front door step.The cry when he had these was"Rag bone, donkey stone!" this question brought back a lot of memories,thank you !! the time I am speaking of was the 1950's but this went on through the 30's and 40's also

I also remember bert's rag & bone man in the North in the 40's & 50's. Ours used to come with a donkey cart, shouting Ragbo, as one word which he didn't finish. Thanks for the memory.
the rags went into paper bones for glue. but by the 60's and 70's they were only taking rags and when i was a kid all i got was baloons for my ma's dresses, cheapskates.
