I stayed at the Hilton docklands recently and booked it on expedia got a very good deal my wife and i stayed two nights with dinner on the first night and breakfast both mornings was just over £130.00 for the both nights which i didn't think was that bad for London. Room was very good with views across the Thames and canary wharf. They have a free buss service to the nearest underground station.

The London Tourist Authority has infomation, though I think their hotels will be moderately expensive. Youth Hostels are the cheapest but the amenities will be minimal. University College, London, Westminster University (near Baker Street) and several other educational institutions rent out rooms reasonably inexpensively during the summer, and can be accessed online. Bed-and-Breakfast Guides, to be found in bookshops, give both prices and evaluate the places they recommend. Three years ago, it cost me 50 pounds a night at a place 3 miles from Heathrow but I had not researched the question at any length.
