Are there companies that develop industrial/technological art ?

With all these plastics, resins, magnetic materials I'd think that artists and designers could generate a whole load of (..) art. The stuff with lights would be fun in shops and offices entrances. But since it needs in-depth engineering..? Does anyone know where stuff like this gets done, or by whom?
