Throwing a sickie?

Tho I have not worked in such a place I have heard of many employers who allow so many 'sick days' per year & recently a friend took 4 days leave & when I asked what was wrong with him he said that he was using up his 'sick days' before they expired! This seems crazy to me & encourages people to skive.. what do you think ( I already know a lot will reply 'sounds like a good idea' so dont bother) thanks

yea that sounds like a good plan until he's used up all of his sick days and then actually comes down with something which causes him to miss work.

wouldnt it be funny if once all his sick days are used for vacationing, he found out he had to have emergency surgery and would be out of work for weeks.?
This is utter rubbish! Companies will allow pay for a certain amount of sickness, but they certainly DO NOT expect you to take them as holiday entitlement. Your friend is an idiot!
i agree must be nice tho
Some companies pay for sick days so I suppose to some its like adding extra to their holiday quota.
There are certainly some companies that allow for employees having that "Monday Morning Feeling" and let them take a set number of days off. In effect these companies accept that people are going to throw a sickie once in a while and just budget for it rather than being unrealistic and expecting everyone to be totally dedicated all the time.

As an employer myself I think it is an encouragement to skive and any member of my staff consistently failing to turn up for work due to self-inflicted injuries such as a hangover or "can't be arsed syndrome" will find themselves suffering a rather uncomfortable interview and a lecture on acting responsibly towards fellow workers who have to cover.
Not a good idea to use them up if you are not ill, because if you really are ill you've no days left :(
usually you have to produce a medical certificate after u avail ur sick leave.
It is only given by the companies if u r actually ill. They are not to be taken like other leaves.
I agree - It's crazy! Although I sometimes think I'm the mug - the only sick leave I've ever taken was when I had chicken pox and they asked me not to go in as the boss' husband hadn't had it! Other than that I've never had so much as a day off sick.

It all comes down to work ethics - it seems to me that some people work hard and some will find any excuse to slack off.
It might be crazy to you, but alot of people work in places like shops that expect you to work on critical holidays. The local Spar stays open on xmas eve, xmas day AND boxing day ffs. All the workers complain. I don't blame them if they then want to throw a sickie another day, to spend some time with their family.
I agree that is a crazy thing to do..but it is true..it does exist. I have seen it in UK and in Australia. Many jobs have a number of sick day entitlements and no requirement to get doctor's letters unless more than a certain number of days (2 or 3?). Thus we have many people with this 'benefit' taking advantage. I believe it is particularly rife in the pblic sector.

The other interesting factor is that most sickdays conveniently fall on either a Monday or Friday! Go figure!
You do get a certain number of full paid sick days per year, but you're not expected to take the maximum. It's meant to be there to protect your pay if you genuinely are ill.

However, some comapanies do something called 'pillow days' which are like 2 extra days holiday a year, but you can just call on the day and take them, like if you've got a hang over or just can't be bothered. Quite a good idea I think because you're more likely to take just the one day. Whereas if you're pretending to be sick, often you think 2 days are more realistic, and so take more.
A lot of 'modern' companies use these days as a method of motivation and avoiding large amounts of sick time. They call them many different things but it's simply a perk to the job or position.

The thought is that by giving people a few days extra leave (on top of their holidays), people will not take extra time off for those Mondays when you're feeling a tad crappy. It makes (in theory) people feel that the company cares for them and thus increases employee motivation/loyalty and decreases time taken off .. some companies also give financial incentives to those that do not take these days off (Royal Mail entered employees with a 100% attendance record into a lottery to win a new car).

Personally I think they're a great idea :O)
i used to work at Barclays.
There was a maximum amount of "Sick" days you could take - not for skiving and it certainly wasn't encouraged.
Once you had been off for all these days the next time you were off sick you had to have a sick interview with your line manager and your sickness was then monitored.
They did "Expire" in a way - think you had 10 days off per year for sickness before you had to have an interview.
The average number of sick days taken by workers in the UK is around 10 ( 8 - 12 ) over recent years.

We only have one life in this world, and i believe having days on the sick ( even if you are ok ) is perfectly acceptable . the working man / woman gets screwed throughout their lives , theres more to life than perfect attendance.
why the hell not?
my last job you were "allowed" two periods of sickness every six months without it being classed as a problem.
although you were given a shitty £200 bonus every three months for perfect attendence - if you workit out you were alwase better off having your week off sick
plus you dont need a doctors line unless you plan to be off for more than a week.
extra 4weeks out of a job you hate doing
working for a company who dont appreciate you
f**k me its your duty
I think it's unfair to both the employee AND the other workers. Unfair to the employee because he or she feels like they have to use them up or they'll "lose out" on the sick days. And it sucks for the co-workers because then they have to pick up the slack because they're missing a person. Either way it's bad for productivity.
