Answers:
Regardless of where you live or work, "Children comes first" that's universal. If you felt your child being sick warranted for you to stay home, you did the right thing. If you would have went to work, and something happened to your child, your boss and everyone else at your job would have been calling you an unfit mother. You did the right thing, so don,t worry about it. If your boss can't understand that, he/she has personal issues which needs to be worked out.
I'm pretty sure that there's now a law that says you are allowed to have time off for things like caring for a sick child, within reason.

Your boss sounds like a miserable git. Get some more info from CAB and confront him with it.
I think i heard somewhere that you can, if i were you i would ring the citizens advice bureau and have a talk, see what they say.

He sounds a right miserable git!!!
