It seems that nowadays the main requirement is to have an accent that makes you sound as though you're in a call centre in India and have the ability to bullshit your way out of anything, just like they do already and end up having been no help whatsoever !!

Been doing it for 8 years and still doing it today, you just need a friendly attitute with patiants and have to be a good listener and to be sympathetic (even if you dont really care what they are saying). You can also do nvqs in customer service which is mostley based on evidence that you can produce while being an advisor e.g letter from customers statements from other collegues etc which will help you to get other jobs if it turns out you like this type of work.

In no way attempt to actually listen to your customers. Cut your telephone customers off if they ask you something that you don't understand. Say things like "bear with me" and "hold the line" while you put them to the back of the telephone queue that they have already been in for 40 minutes.
In essence, be a total contradiction of customer service and you'll thrive in your job.
