How does one earn money writing? I mean, small to medium sized articles for magazines and newspapers?
I have qualifications.. I'm finishing my PhD in engineering.. need to earn some extra cash.. thought I cud write on science/engineering/spirituali. any one know how? Is the procedure like first write a piece and then send it to editors, or the other way around?

Try the Writers Handbook 2007 - WH Smiths or other good bookshops stock this. It gives lists of publications and what they are looking for. Have a browse through it, before you buy it though.
