I have a west highland terrier which barks constantly as soon as someone comes near the door,?
Answers:
Get a training collar or an automatic bark collar. Works wonders. My mother has a little ankle biter that did the same thing, she got a training collar and zapped him every time he would go off. He learned very quickly and hasnt had to wear the collar for 6 months now.
try the mute button lol xx
Best take her to a dog school otherwise put up with it
You want to be grate- ful, he is guarding you and the house.
All dogs do that nothing seems to help but just firmly say"no bad" but don't slap her/him or anything like that. If your dog stops after you say no praise him/her with treats.
all he is doing is protecting you and your property be grateful as this puts intruders off dont make a fuss with him as it will encourage him let him have a bark and be done with
Welcome to terrier ownership. It has been my experience that terriers are yappy by nature. Every Westie that boarded at the kennel I worked at yapped and barked so much they lost their voices.
Keep him in a calm submissive mood dont get mad at him when he barks it will only make him sense your mad energy and bark more try being calm and when he starts acting like he's about to bark poke him with all your fingers in the side like a dog would bite or nip and correct him.
probably natural dog behaviour. if you havent had him long he is probably a bit scared. :)
I watched this on Dog Borstal. Fill a bottle with pasta and every time he does something you don't like shake it at him. It may take a few goes but he'll soon get the mesage. It dosn't hurt him, they just don't like the noise. It dosn't matter what age the dog is.
What happened the previous 4 years? Westies are incredibly 'my home' oriented. He/she is just doing his/her 'job'. We just disconnected the doorbell - we knew when there was someone there! Love them - one of the best, most loyal breeds there are!
wind him up
Nothing wrong with the dog, he is guarding his territory and all normal dogs do this. He will probably bark at the postman and the window cleaner too.
Don`t worry as long as he doesn`t bark constantly for no reason I don`t see you have a problem.
He is a dog, they are meant to bark occasionally!
i had a similar problem but it went along with the dog to a new home it was also 5
i have got a westie named max he is 5 aswell and he does the same thing he protecting is terrortiry one day a postman posted a letter and i opened the door max got out and chased him down the road and bit his leg he is just protecting is family but i suppose if it gets on your nerves everytime he barks then i suggest you get a dog trainer to help you good luck
Does he get to greet the person at the door or do you shut him in a room while your at the door? Maybe he is worried about you if he cant see you at the door, teach him to sit a little away from the door but facing it and tell him to wait (or stay) while you open the door then close it. Hope this helps. (Any tips on getting a stuborn westie to come in the park?)
well I'd be worried if someone came near the door and they didn't bark!
he's just protecting his territory.
this is the way i see it.
if someone was hovering around my front door with intention to break in, and my dogs (a dalmatian and a doberman)
didn't bark, I'd be really disappointed with my dogs.
train him not to.
I have two westies and they both like to bark at the doorbell. My vet told me not to shout at them as for a dog barking is no effort and when they hear you shout they just up the competition and bark longer and louder. I try to just remove them from the door and lock them in another room and this usually does the trick.
he is just letting people know he is there
I have a westie who is 4 years old and barks at everything that moves outside. Seems to be part of the breed, good guard dogs and they are very protective over their family members. I would not swap her for the world - I love the breed and they have so many other good points. Bonfire night with her was a nightmare she barked constantly for 8 hours and nothing we did would stop her.
