How much should it cost to have a chinchilla put down?

We had a two minute consultation with a vet - and were advised that our only option was to have our chinchilla put to sleep. We have been charged £58.30 for this. Is this excessive - or as we should expect?

Answers:
Yes, this amount sounds correct.I am sorry for your loss. Chinchis are so endearing.

Keep in mind you are paying for the drugs, the training, the staffing, equipment, etc. when you go to the vet. I hope that your vet also set aside some time to visit with you about the euthanasia, as well. The drugs available to us for euthanasia these days typically are somewhat costly but they do such a wonderful job for what they are supposed to do. Ideally, if using injection, the only thing the animal feels should be the prick of a needle and nothing more. That is worth the cost alone, to me.

Just to give you an idea our charge was approx. $50-60USD for small pets such as yours.

Again, sorry for the loss.
Goes with the territory of owning pets
Sorry to hear about the chinchilla. Losing a pet is always awful.

But, yes, that sounds about right, you're paying for the drugs and the vet's time (notoriously expensive). It was about that price when I had my cat put down a few years ago.
Since you live in the UK, the old tried and true .22 round to the head isn't available to you.

Humanely, you can knock a small animal out with ether (applied to a sock) from engine starting fluid. Then cut off its air supply.
Hi!

Yeah, I think that's about right. However, when our mouse had to be put down, we didn't get charged. I think they used some of the gas they were using for another animal!

Anyway, I suppose they've got all their overheads to pay, i.e., staff, premises, equipment, sleeping gas and then they have to dispose of the animal's body.

Rather makes me wish I'd paid attention in Biology class, and gone on to be a vet!

It's a license to print money, innit?

I'm so sorry for your loss. Will you get another?
i run a feret rescue here in the states our vet charges us $20.00 in us funds if we take the animal with us which we do. how ever by the time we get there we know what has to be done it could be the consultation fee is what caused it to go up sorry for your loss
that sounds about right. Are they disposing of the body too ?
As chinchilla owner (i have four, oldest 19 years)

you have to do what is best for your pet.
money should not be an issue.
It sounds about right! I asked my teacher and she said that sounds about right!! She said it coast her $68.00 for her 18 month old chinchilla to be put down!!! You are very welcome!!
As expected..it will cost about $ 100. US just about everywhere.
I'm sorry to hear about this, the bill sounds about right I'm afraid. Although the consultation sounds rather abrupt.
Small animals are notoriously difficult to euthanase humanely; it takes skill and some specialist equipment.
Then there are the drugs which aren't cheap, and have to be administered by trained staff.
A vet is about a quarter of a million pounds in debt by the time they have qualified and set up in practice; then they have all the bills and wages to pay.

And lastly there are laws concerning the disposal of the bodies.
I can only speak for my own vet's fees, I live in CA. A short consultation would run about $30, and a fee to put a small animal down is around $15.
