Yorkshire Terriers?
Hi can anyone tell me a bit about yorkies. My friend has a lovely little girlie one and is planning to breed from her just the once and has offered me the pick of the litter. I have always been used to fairly big dogs as a rule (with the exception of a couple of russels that I adored). My youngest child in the house is 12 and we are not looking at any more children as I am now 50. My friends little yorky isn't at all yappy or snappy & the mum, dad, siblings are all the same..would this be a nice little dog to have.I have lots of love, room and plenty of places for nice walks, I live in Weymouth UK.

they are very protective and territorial.
they can be snappy towards people that arent close family too them.
apart from that they can make good pets
Great choice in dog. Lovely animal. Won't require hours and miles of execise. You will love it.
I love mine. He is so sweet. Very smart. He is a barker though. It is tough not to fall in love with them.
Yes a Yorkshire would be prefect for your family and since your child is 12 he will know not to be rife with it and if you have a lot of love to give the puppy then go for it.
Personally I usually dont like small dogs (I have 3 greyhounds!) but Yorkies are OK. They are feisty and can be loud but are generally intelligent animals. They can be snappy and very much a one person dog, you will need to watch that all the family handles the dog and that it does not become to attached to one person. They tend to become attached to the person who feeds them so let family members take it in turns to do that.
They need stimulation and benefit very much from training from an early age.
I don't have a Yorkie but hope that my answer helps. I have a Maltese Terrier who is very much like a Yorkie, same sort of temperament and so on. I also have a 5 year old daughter and they get on very well but I do have to keep an eye on them (obviously) because he does let her know who is the boss. They are very loving but quite yappy when someone comes to visit. However mine does calm down after he has had his fuss and then just settles at their feet. Although they do like exercise, they can also be a house dog and don't need too much walking if you don't want to take them. In fact, if we take mine too far, we end up carrying him back. Your child is a nice age to be able to appreciate a dog and help in the caring of it. I hope you go ahead. When I lived with my parents we had 2 dogs and to move out and not be greeted by my 'pals' was awful. It wasn't long before we bought 2 new dogs to make our home complete. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your new bundle of fluff.
I had a yorkshire terrier and he lived for six happy years, unfortunately he died from a tumour in his stomach. These dogs are friendly, not at all snappy.A great companion, love to be cuddled.I am moving house and would love one again as they are a great house dog
Hi there
I had my first yorkie 'Boris' just over 18 months ago. I also have a collie cross labrador. Yorkshire Terriers adore people, are usually none aggressive and love attention. They are very intelligent little dogs and learn very quickly to go to 'pee' outside and to sit etc on request. They seem to want to please you constantly and have a way that even if they do accidently 'pee' or knock over great Auntie Mabels antique vase - you just can't help but forgive their little faces/eyes peering at you from underneath their 'fringe!'.
A yorkie in the house I believe is a welcome house mate for their entire life - I defy anyone not to fall in love with them. My husband's words when I bought my 6 inch little puppy home was 'I will never be seen taking him for a walk'. Two weeks later, when my collie cross goes on his daily walks, you ccould see my husband with a tiny little yorkie on the end of a lead.. even grown men find it hard to resist!!
Lots of love, lots of cuddles and lots of toys, and your Yorkie will be your best friend for life!!
Happy Yorkie days to you.
