How long will it be before my fish is cured?

I took Jeremy Kyle out of the tank and put him in fishy hospital (another tank) as he has whitespot. I have been treating him and my other fish (which don't appear to have symptoms) with King British Whitespot Control. Jeremy Kyle seems a little more active now but still has whitespots. How long does it normally take for the fish to recover and once cured.. how long should i leave it before I put him back in the tank?

Answers:
keep it in for a week if it still hasn't gone treat it again and put it back in 2 weeks time.
The whole thing sounds kinda fishy!

Ich or Whitespot is a protozoaen parasite that is usually around in any aquarium. When your fish is subjected to undue stress, the natural coating of enzymes around its body deteriorates until it is so thin that these parasites can attach themselves to the body of your fish.

When treating whitespot you are only able to kill free swimming parasites, since the medications will not effect the eggs. This is also true with the spots you see on your fish. They've been attached to your fish for some time, and are most likely already covered with new enzymes. This being said the medications which you are treating your fish with are not actually getting rid of the spots on them, but stopping them from getting more while their own natural immune system is left to dispose of them in a natural way.

These parasites can lay under the enzyme coating of your fish for over a week in some cases, generally your fish will "drop" them after 3-5 days. If the treatments do not resolve the infestation of "whitespots" after 72 hours, please dont hesitate to try new approaches. Mardel Coppersafe is one of the best products to treat fish with external parasites, however if you are housing invertibrates in the tank it will destroy them as the copper is toxic to them.

Other traditional treatments include Tank Buddy tablets which are based with Methelyn blue, a chemical used in many applications from dying RNA, right through to ridding your tank of ich.
