Why do slugs only come out at night, and how dya get rid with dogs?

We wait for a rainy day or evening when the ground should be nice and damp which generally makes the slugs come out and then go into the garden at around 22.00 with a bucket of very salty water and a torch (not to mention rubber gloves) and collect them and drop them in the bucket ! It's a yucky job but we did this last year and collected several hundred and since then we haven't had so much of a problem. I know it sounds crazy but it's really then only way when you have dogs as slug pellets can be harmful - even those that say dog friendly - I think if they contain something powerful enough to kill slugs then they wouldn't be so good for my dogs either ! Alternatively you could try some of the commercial slug traps on the market or even beer traps but I have found the midnight collection solution to be the most effective if the most revolting.

Too dry in day...coat with peanut butter and the dog will get rid...
Put salt were the slugs are this kills them, safer than pellets especially if you have animals.
My dogs and cat never touched the slugs that came out at night, so I took the risk of putting slug-poison (bought at the garden center) under the sink and under the fridge . places where the dogs could not get to the poison.
Also, if you know through what whole the slugs come out... some salt there will stop them from crossing.
Use an iron product. There are several, one of them is Sluggo. It won't hurt your pets, and you'll be happy because suddenly your plants will stop getting holes chewed in the leaves.
I use snail poison pellets my dog doesn't touch them and the slugs dissapear after 4 to 5 days
cut the top off a beer can, bury it in the dirt, fill it about quater of way with beer, sounds silly but believe me it works
i hate the little **** 's! what are they? why are they so gross? i had one on my kitchen floor last night! I was horrified. If you put salt on them your left with a disgusting yellow mess where all the guts have spilled out. I am sure slug pellets are safe with pets.
Please don't put slug poison out.Hedgehogs eat slugs, as do birds,turtles and other animals.If they eat some poisoned slugs,they will be poisoned,too.The best thing to use is a shallow saucer of beer.This way,if something eats a dead (or drunk)slug it will just get tipsy,but it shouldn't kill it.I don't kill the slugs at all;I feed them to my turtles,they love them.
