Does your dog go mad at fireworks?
I love Bonfire night but its a nightmare at home because my 10 year old Jack Russell goes ballistic over the noise of the fireworks.
We keep our pets indoors etc as they advise. But everytime a firework goes off (which is very frequently on 5 November and the days leading up to it) she goes crazy, running round the house howling and barking really loudly. It goes on all the time the fireworks are being let off and its a nightmare! I'm terrified the neighbours are going to complain.
I'm dreading it even more this year as I'll be 36 weeks pregnant on 5 November.
Anyone got any tips how to control her? They don't make doggie earplugs as far as I know!
Answers:
I have a labrador that is really petrified of fireworks ( and thunder storms)
I don't belive in giving a dog drugs to calm it s they can harm them especially if they have any medical conditions.
Over dog likes a dark hiddy place and we find our bathroom is best, it has a tiny window and if you close it tight noise is minimal.
She goes in there herself and we put off the light and close the door (not tight though in case they want out)
If they are really scared a cuddly helps, go into the area with the dog and reassure it.
Taker her to the vets they can give her something to calm her on Nov 5th.
Our's aint bothered by fireworks at all, im pretty confident you could take her to a display.
ask your vet because theres a plug in devise you can get to help it does work my grandad had one for his dogs sorry i dont know what its called though
Walk the dog through and very close to a large firework display. This makes the dog go from angry to very scared, then when it hears a bang in future it will hide rather than bark.
i feel so sorry for dogs around this time of the year!!
phone your vet and ask them what you can do!
My puppy Saffy is not bothered by the sound of fireworks. It is essential to buy a CD with the sound of fireworks on it and play it throughout the year turning the volume up slightly each time your dog can cope with that level. Do not make a fuss or do anything different as your extra attention doesn't actually re-assure your dog but instead confirms to your dog that she has reason to be frightened. Just make sure that she has been out for her walks earlier than usual on that day
no.
my dog runs in her dog house to take cover.
o.o
my neighbours dog has that problem if you take her to the vets then they can give you some tablets for her
close the curtains, turn the radio up loud and ask your vet for a tranquiliser. How did she get like this? Do you fuss and reassure her when she started to show fear? If so, you have reinforced her fear.
Tell the neighbours she is terrified. They will understand.
Have two spaniels and they go absolutely mental everytime a firework goes off, which is a lot at the moment with the local idiots down at the park.
You get herbal tablets from pet shops which apparently do the job.
Good Luck
my dogs does excactly the same thing. Her reson is because she think it is a gun being fired off. She use to be a hunter so she thinks we are shooting birds or somethin! wuz yours a bird dog?
My dog doesn't go mad at fireworks
It's already mad
my sons dog is the same. the vet will give your dog valium
Your Neighbours should understand there are millions of dogs who suffer from the end of October to January through stupidity if your dog has been like this all his life he wont change now put some background music on and try to check the dog dont leave him to sort it out for himself.
My dog does the exact same thing with fireworks as well as other loud noises. Once she even ran away because she was so scared.
A good idea would be to take her to the vet and ask about some tranquilizer pills that will help calm her down. If you think that is too rational, ask a friend if you could keep your dog at their house while the fireworks are going on.
OR you could just try locking her in a room where she can't do any damage and leave on a radio for her.
Good luck!
if you go to Holland & barrat health shop and get some (rescue)
its extract of flowers about £4 4 drops on a chew will calm her down please try it it does work I have a 5 year old welsh border
and her heart rate was 20 to the dozen before I heard about this
Our previous collie was nervous and we put a little olive oil on some cotton wool and made ear plugs out of it. This seemed to dampen the noise sufficiently in order to make him less afraid. he still was aware of the noise but it calmed him. Our previous collie cross has no fear at all, in fact he comes with us to the big end of Cowes (IOW) fireworks. But he does seem to want to sit on my foot throughout for security.
The other option is to get a tranquiliser from the vet ( do not use human Meds, this can be dangerous, as the dosage in dogs relates to weight !!!)
and accept she is a bit dozy and take extra care to keep her in, as this will make her also disorientated. I can see another scenario coming:- a 10 year old Jack Russell's nose being put out of joint with a new Baby. Be aware that she needs a firm hand once this baby is born.....unless you have another child already ?
Good luck with both !!!
I have 2 dogs that are petrified of fireworks! I close all the windows but leave internal doors open so that they don't feel trapped anywhere. I have bought a DAP infuser, which you can get from the vets for about £15. This is a plug in that simulates the smell that newborn pups smell from their mother. This makes them feel safe when they do start going off.
The best thing to do is to ignore your dogs. This is extremely hard to do but trust me it works. If you make a fuss over then when they get scared they think that they are being praised for being scared and acting the way they do. My eldest dog, both greyhounds, shakes so much that he finds it dififcult to breath. 2 years ago I had to get him sedated but last year I used the DAP infuser and ignored him when he got scared, I still sat with him so that he knew I was there but when he calmed down a bit I praised him. Dogs then learn that if they calm down that they get praised and treats.
My other dog is a bit more clever than my other one so when they start I get her to do some obedience exercises so that her mind is taken off the fact that these horrendous noises are happening.
This year I have also tried a de-sensitising CD of firework noises and I have seen an improvement in my eldest but the test will be firework night!
I have also been recommended by my local pet shop to use an anti-anxiety herbal remedy called anxiety. You can get it off the internet for £8.99 or buy it in your pet shop for about £10. Anxiety is drops that you can put directly into the dog's mouth or you can drop it on to a treat and give it to them that way. This is the first year that I have used them but we have had a few stray fireworks go off and when they have I got up and put a few drops onto a sausage and they both calmed right down almost immediately. I am not sure how well they will work when there are lots of fireworks though!
A bit of a long winded answer but there are many things you can do but my advice is to:
1) Ignore your dog when it gets scared.
2) Get a DAP infuser and plug it into the room where your dogs run when they get scared to make that room as safe as possible, you can also create a little hidey hole, a box or something so that they can hide if they feel scared
3) Try a de-sensisation CD of firework noises and increase the volume gradually (you can buy this off e-bay for under £5).
4) Try and take their mind off it by playing games or training.
5) Use the Anxiety drops when they start to go off
Good luck
