My cat of 9 years runs away, have tried tempting food at home but not working, how can i make him stay at home
He often stays at a community home for learning disabilities they say they do not feed him, so I assume he steals food from other places, I feel he hates me even tho I feed him good food, he has toys, scratching posts, comfortable beds to sleep on, cat milk and anything else he could want. He was fine until about a year ago and it's now driving me crazy! Help!
Answers:
is he neutered? That will help him to not roam. If he isnt neutered than that is why he does that. If he is neutered there really isnt anything you can do about it. All of my cats disappear for days at a time and they are all spayed/ neutered. Sorry but nothing that you can do really.
Keep him in for a least 2 weeks.
He more then likely is getting food from somewhere else. My cats do the same thing. Or maybe he has a female cat friend!..
It's over and done
do u stil have time 2 play with him, or spend some quality time with it?! i think his finding joy with someone else now...
You can't. Cats choose their own homes.
cats are extremly independant animals they tend to do what they want when they want try taking him to the vets and get chopped might work but no guarantees
Put a little butter on the tops of his feet. He will lick this and get the taste/scent of where his home is.
It may be that he senses he brings joy to the people at the home. Animals have an amazing affect on people with disabilities and it has been proven that they bring about some kind of emotional healing to them. There may be a new person there who moved in about a year ago and he has a bond with them.
If you love something, set it free
tie him up..lock him inside.
You must realise - you NEVER own a cat - S/he merely condescends to live in the same space as you. If the cat has now decided to live elsewhere and merely return to your home for food occasionally then sobeit. There is very little you can do - it's the cat who decides where S/he wants to live.
having had to trap feral cats, the best way to get them to you is coocked chicken, or fresh fish.
but you never own a cat, if it likes others, it will go to them.
get it neutered, and love it alot, spend as much time as you can grooming him.
Cats are pretty fickle. I have learned the hard way to keep a cat in the house. Period. I had a beloved huge yellow (orange) cat who roamed at night, always at the door in the morning. He would come in, get a bite to eat, then wake up my son for school. Like clockwork. He travelled the neighborhood at night. When at 2 years old, I decided to have him neutered to stay home, the vet told me he had feline AIDS. He would die within 6 months a horrible death. We had him put to sleep. Painful lesson to learn and now my cats are restrained inside. Get a litter box, and keep him in if you cherish him at all.
What happened a year ago? Did you bring another animal into the home or did someone move in? Sounds like something has upset him.
Also, is he neutered? They tend to roam a lot when they are not neutered. Get him neutered and keep him inside and give him lots of attention and maybe he will come around.
cats choose where they want to love. they are not like dogs who are very loyal, you cant force this on your cat, time to get a new cat
I had a cat that was 10 yrs old and when he left, he never came back. When cats get older, they tead to leave home and pass away, when they know it is time. I know that is not what you want to hear, but it is the true.
Has anything changed in the household? Any new small children? Is he an old cat in a new home? They like their peace. I would not recommend neutering after 9 years. Just reliable feeding times, quiet and predictability, and affection. Strong-arm tactics: you could try locking him in overnight after his evening feed (make 2 feeding times per day - don't leave food around). At first he won't like it, but then he'll get used to it. More you cannot do. That's their nature.
There is probably a female cat in your neighborhood that is in heat. Male cats can smell that miles away. If you get him fixed it might take the problem away but they are still attracted to the hormones when they are fixed. Just love him so much, pet him often, snuggle him. so he will have reason to stay at your house- cats are curious creatures, so he might just be roaming around seeing whats going on outside his home territory.
He might have a girlfriend there. You should desex him so that he wont go out to find his girlfriend. Or you may buy another female cat just for him, he must be lonely at home.
Why would you want to.
Have your cat neutered and then force him to stay indoors, but it sound slike he is ready to leave home for good, he has most probably found a mate and a wild one at that, so leave him be, he will learn to fend for himself, and his family. Yea hun he has everything that you want what about what he wants, another cat, maybe that is what he is after.
That's easy, cats love attention and sense love and affection.
And cats pick who it feels more comfortable and can give what it wants.
The hardest is getting your cat back, No point in locking it in the house it will hate it, and the first opportunity he's gone.
When he is around give him love and affection, Buy some fresh fish or meat he really loves,( e.g beef slices for sandwiches my cats all over me with that! Not to much though he will expect it all the time) only you will know what food he loves.
Show him you love him, avoid anything you know he does not like.
It will take time, but hes definitely found someone who he is happy with.
Is he fixed? If not, get him fixed. Keep him indoors. I am a firm believer that cats really are not very safe outdoors. Keep them inside to protect them. Hopefully you don't have predators in your area that will eat your cat and hopefully he has all his claws. He may be bored. Have you thought of adopting a female cat to keep him company when you are busy? That may help!
I had a prob with my cat . Put butter/marge on his paws. trust me!!!!they lick the butter off and get the sent of their home. if that don't work stroke him and cuddle him he may be seeking attention? if not get a litter tray and keep him in for a month . I find this a meaner approach though
Is he neutered? If not, get him done straight away before you lose him for good. Keep him indoors- permanently. He will be warm, safe, well-fed, and free from all the horrible and fatal cat diseases outside cats die from, not to mention cars, dogs, perverts and fur-stealers.
He's obviously going to school to learn something. I would imagine that he has many people at the disability centre who love him very much. He'll come home when he gets hungry - don't worry.
youre cats obviously going because someone there is very kind to your cat and your cat has an emotional attatchment to someone there, maybe someone is your home is hurting your cat without you knowing?
