the fish has a lump on its side that looks like it`s full of air the fish is lively in itself but finds it difficult to swim keeps floating to the pond surface

Answers:
An infection of the air sac that they use to float or descend in water. Need to visit your local pet store for some medicine.
that sounds horrible

get the thing out of its missery
its a disease but you can get medicinr for it
I have a goldfish pond in my backyard. The fish are all different. The can be used to a certain environment. We buy them from a pet store and the contamination there is huge. I would continue feeding them until pond temp reaches 53 degrees. Don't add anything to the water. It sounds as though you have several fish and this is the only one to exhibit the problem. Basically, nature is nature. The strong survive!
Paul O'Grady had a vet on the show and there was a fish on there with the same problem, you will need to seperate it from the rest of the fish and get it some antibiotics from yr vets
this is swim bladder disease, some say it can sometimes be cured and sure say it can't, go to one of the goldfish websites
and see what they recommend
it could be some kind of tumour or cyst take him out of the pond place him in a tank and treat him with a tonic to try and clear up the infection
