Really depends on the dog and where you get it. I would recommend one of the following two options:
1. Get a dog from a shelter. Quite often about $100 but that can include first set of shots and spay/neuter or a discount on such things. Check with the shelter for details.
2. Get a dog from a breed rescue. Depends on the breed but $150-$250 or so depending on the dogs age etc and it may include some of the items above.
Do Not under any circumstances by a dog from a pet store as many sell puppy mill puppies. If for some reason 1 or 2 above does not work out for you find a reputable breeder.
Also remember that the initial cost is just a start as food, vet care, and pet sitting if you go out of town will all come at a cost. The amount will vary greatly based on the breed in terms of how much they eat and what kind of health issues they have.

depends on where you get them, and what kind of breed you get. a dog from the shelter usually costs around $100. a large purebred dog from a breeder may cost from $500-$1000, and a small purebred dog from a breeder may cost from $200-$500. but whatever you do, don't buy a dog from a pet shop! b/c they are usually very prone to diseases (b/c they haven't been bred properly). even if they have health certificates that guarantee that they're healthy, 99% of the time the dog will have recurring health problems throughout its life that will cost you hundreds of dollars in vet bills.

A lot. Not only do you have the cost of buying them there are all the innoculations they have to get, food, treats, collar, lead, and all other sorts of stuff like bedding and water/food bowls. I would say on average it costs me about £20.00p per week to feed my dog and although I got him from a dogs home it still cost me £100.00p for that. Having said that it has been and will carry on being money well spent as he's as much a part of our family as the kids are.

I actually went to my local animal shelter and I picked out my new dog just yesterday. and i found a chihuahua, he looks just like the tacobell dog. I paid a grand total of $102.75 and that got me my dog. he gets neutered, dis-solvable stitches. so i don't have to bring him back. and a 10 day to bring him in if i feel there is anything wrong with him for free..they also gave me a collar for him and leash and they also gave him all this shots he needed and dewormed, I personally think that is a great deal compared to getting one from a pet shop. plus..the money you spend on this adoption helps out the shelter. and get to help alittle one.. their were so many to chose from its a hard! Make sure you ask to see the dog in the little rooms they have so you can get a sense of how the animal acts. they are some real aggressers out there, and if you have any other dogs usually they ask for you to bring them in so you can see how they get along.

I have a 7mth old Cavalier pup. His food (James Wellbeloved) costs us £6 ever few weeks. His insurance is just under £10 per mth.

If you buy from a private breeder, it depends on the type of dog. A responsible, caring breeder will not charge you outrageous prices because they are not in it for the money. A backyard breeder mostly likely will charge outrageous prices because they ARE only in it for the money. This also depends on where you live.
The part that can get really expensive is the vet care. At the very least, the dog will need an annual exam and vaccinations. The cost of that depends on where you live also. A vet visit for me costs 40 dollars, and that's not including any medicines, x-rays, fecal/blood tests, etc. Thankfully I have a very healthy dog thus far and have not needed to pay for any extra vet care. The vaccinations cost me about 45 dollars total for this year. You may not be so lucky with your dog. It might need lots of vet care. Can you afford to pay for it all? There is also pet insurance to help cover those costs. I don't have it right now because I have a savings account to just for my pets to cover emergencies. I just put the 40 dollars I would spend on insurance a month into that account. It works for me.

If you buy a puppy, do you have the patience to teach housebreaking and to deal with the messes they WILL make? Will it make you angry if they ruin some of your stuff?
