I don't feel birds should be kept as pets. Especially the larger species.
Not only are you taking them away from flying, these animals are smart. Even the small ones are pretty brainy and the large parrots are as smart as preschoolers. Imagine keeping a preschooler in a cage!
They also have dietary and sunlight requirements that most people don't know about.
Keeping birds, especially the larger ones, in cages is cruel.
I see so many that are just miserable. I wish there were stiffer laws about keeping them, but then, I wish there were stiffer laws about all pet ownership, so I guess I'm out of luck.
Cheers.
yes
i'm all for pets, but very much against caging birds. not only is it bad for the bord, but what enjoyment can an owner possibly get from having a bird sit still in a small cage?
No birds should be free to fly around the earth. Sometimes I am confused on what gives humans the right to exploit everything on this earth. It is really sad. I wish we had more respect.
You might be right.
However, IF they are pets there must be a 100% commitment to treat them well and letting them out of the cage sometimes.
Well, I feel bad sometimes that pet birds are kept in cages, but if you tame the bird, you can allow it to fly around the room, or make a tree for it with clean branches, and it can sit on it and gnaw on the branches. A bird can get lonely by itself, so often its good to get another bird as a friend. If not, you should spend as much time with it as possible.
I have only had parakeets and cockatiels. I always left their cage open. The cage is their own safe haven and they like to go outside their cage. When they want to, they will go back inside. That has always worked with me. It allows the bird freedom and also will make it feel closer to you. Yes, I believe a bird should fly. I don't believe in clipping their wings.
hello i am a bird and i want 2 be free i shall protest for freedom
I agree with you 100%!! I have 4 birds amazons, macaws, and a cockatiel! I think that they should only be in their cages when I cant keep my eye on them. They have perches all throughout my home, and my macaws will climb up the stairs to find me. I do not cut any of my girls wings, and I let them fly daily. I have a12' tall aviary, in my backyard, so that they can stretch their wings.
Well, it would be good to keep it caged part of the time. Like at night and when a door is open so that it won't fly away. but birds need some freedom too and keeping it caged without any attention could make it sick (and surprisingly depressed). I have two birds myself and i leave them out of the cage during the day and have a perch for them. Then at night i keep them in the cage. They're much happier that way!
Personally I think No. But that's just my opinion. I don't believe in caging rabbits, hamsters etc but I know a lot of people do. I would rather they were free in the wild and let nature take it's course. If you want a pet, get a cat or dog.
yes, but there are so many dangers and predators to get them. domesticated birds are meant for cages. as long as the cage gives the bird plenty of room and the owner lets them out to spread thier wings daily
i hade a great answer for this question because i read it as should BRIDES be kept in cages as pets, but after clarifying i dont know
No it very cruel. they should be free or fried.
Yes a bird should fly! But some birds are ment to be kept as pets! Once a bird is born, sometimes they clip their wings, so they never learned how to fly! so if the owner just all of a sudden let the wings grow out and let the bird lose, the bird may end up dying!
But i do agree with you, birds should be able to fly, just like fish can swim around, etc.
It is all part of Life!
Our love birds live in a large aviery cage where they can fly, build nests and have a nice life. When one get's loose it takes hours to catch them and you have to be careful not to hurt them in the process.
Our parrot sits on an open tree perch all day and plays and climbs (as parrots do) then goes to a cage at night to sleep. His flight feathers are clipped so he can't fly UP and we can take him outside. When the parrot is ready to sleep, it just goes to the cage by itself and gets in and pulls the door closed.
If you are going to get a pet bird, you should keep it in the cage to keep it safe. Flying indoors can be dangerous and the bird can hit a window, fall behind furniture and a lot of other things and die.
It takes much training and taming to get a pet bird accustomed to being out of it's cage.
yes they should be free... I despise seeing anything caged!
It's okay to leave birds in their cages for saftey, but the need several hours a day outside to get exercise.
The problem with most people leaving birds in cages is that the cages are too small. Cages are expensive and people don't want to get a large cage because of cost or because it "takes up too much room."
I keep my relatively small parrots in large cages so they can easily fly around when they are in them and I put in LOTS of toys, natural branches, shredding material and huts to keep them entertained. My birds love their cages because it makes them feel safe like they have a safe place to return to when they want to eat or sleep or play. I also let my birds out for several hours each day so they can fly around and I can play with them.
Birds need a lot of care and attention, they are messy and are rather expensive to keep (people don't realize this at first when getting a bird) I think that's why many bird owners stick their birds inside a cage and leave it there. Yes, a bird needs it's freedom - but that doesn't mean it shouldn't have a cage if the cage is an apropriate size and the bird is well cared for.
you can keep them in cages but leave the cage doors open so they can come and go as they please
i think this is down to morals/oppininnion. the cage should be big enough for the bird. if it was that cruel surely the rspca wudnt allow it..
I don't think birds should be kept indoors in cages. Some birds can be kept in large aviaries but it is still not completely satisfactory.
I used to have a budgerigar. We used to let him fly around the house. He would fly onto peoples shoulders. He's was great. We got him a partner after a few years and we found him dead a week later. Two months after, my sister was cleaning the cage outside and as she lifted the top half off, Magic's ex jumped down and fly off over the trees. The reason I say this is, budgies live in Australia. I live in Ireland. It's very unlikely that she survived for long. To answer your question, it depends on whether they are a pet in their native habitat. I was young then but now I don't believe in having a bird in captivity, nevermind a cage. It a cruel hobby that serves no purpose to the bird except maybe to speak some language that it doesn't understand.
well I have two of em and they dont live in cages, the one feels comfortable living in the huge bay window overlooking our lake, but the other feels like it has control of the house..problem with that is.you must constantly be following the little craphawk with a pail of bleach water to clean up after it( the company frowns when they go to sit on a chair after the bird has been sitting on the back of it for 10 minutes) lets just say it leaves its mark everywhere it goes. and just leave it alone for a day..go shopping.but leave all the nice clean dishes in the drain tray to air dry.you get the point, and if you dont you wil,l in a matter of hours after leaving the bird out.
No. People should stop buying them and keeping them as pets, they should be in the wild were they belong.True bird lovers should know this.
I own a parakeet, the door on the gage is opened I always take the top off during the day so it may fly when it wants to. I check it's water and blow the seed husks out everyday or refill the food holder, It's wings are not clipped and when it does fly it always fly back into it's cage.
The only time I put the top back on is at night, because it likes the large loop and sleeps in it. But the door stays open, and also during the day it gets sunlight.
You birds need exercise, if not by flight they need to climb, and play. Flight is a good thing for them if the area allows SAFE flight. A cage is needed for several reasons two main being they need a place to call their own(a safe zone) but more important left out there are many, many things they can get into that will certainly cut life short quickly. Aggressive flight into a window, ceiling fan, electric wires, chocolate, other pets, the list goes on and on. My birds are out of their cages more than they are in them but the doors are always open until night or if I have to leave them. I forgot about fuego only once and when I arrived back home the cord on my T.V. was severed and he had a burn mark on his beak. I felt terrible and he was darn lucky to be alive. If birds had saliva he would certainly be dead. All and all I think you will find a happy medium in what I have told told you here. Just remember as smart as they are they don't understand our technology. They learn to trust you as the owner mate friend whatever. I also am against clipping only one wing as out of control flight to the ground may lead them where they should not be i.e hot stove, sharp objects walls window fans, traffic etc.
I hope this can help you.have a nice day!
And to ' pageys ' the wild is where we have completely destryed several species of birds and other animals. If you really believe the rain forrest is still a safe place for these wonder pets you are sadly in the dark. I challenge ANYONE to say that my birds http://webpages.charter.net/rjsworld/pag. are not in the happiest safest place they could possibly be. I made one error that could have kill one of my birds but people in the wild are causing complete extinction. You uniformed folks need to take a good look at the world and get off your band wagon. Here is where you need to focus your attention. see the movie clip at: http://www.bigcatrescue.org/animal_abuse.
I have a Hahns Macaw (a small Macaw) with a large cage (its about 40 times his size if not more) with real tree branches and different toys to stimulate him and constant supplies of fresh food (everything from fruit to meat as they are partial to a bit of meat in the wild!) and water. This bird was bred in captivity and knows no other way of life, I do not agree with taking birds from the wild however. If you have birds you need to realise they are more intelligent than most people think and also need to exercise their wings. Harley (my hahns macaw) is often out of his cage all day, and enjoys sitting in the kitchen while i prepar dinner or running around the living room floor. I done a lot of research before I got Harley and one man in a pet shop advised me to get the smallest cage possible for the bird so he couldnt get away from us. Well I believe that is completely the wrong answer, if a bird wnts to keep away from you, like any other animal, it is for a reason. and personally i wouldnt want to stay somewhere where i wasnt able to stretch my arms out and move around without smacking into cage bars.
only problem is that birds raised domestically as opposed to in the wild can't just be set free and everything is fine. it is like letting a pet bunny out the door to be free. 9 times out of 10 it will die due to lack of shelter, food, or by becoming a predators food.
there are a lot of people who take great care of their birds. my co worker has two medium size birds and they have a bird room. they are safe from the outside (don't think they would survive the snow). he's had them for as long as i've known them (6 years)
My birds fly around my living room all the time, escept for two budgies who are ponly a couple of months old and just don't want to come out of their cage. They get a lotta visitors tho!
