Why does my 20 week old puppy now start eating his own poo?

Answers:
This is simply a foul habit. I spoke to my vet about this last week at my 11 week old puppy is doing it. Depending on what you are feeding the puppy there is undigested food in the puppy's faeces - this smells like food to them so tempts them to eat their own excrement. It is not a vitamin deficinecy as some suggest and you should give him a row when you catch him doing this!
Try changing his diet to a more digestable food - I have just changed my puppy from Beta puppy to Burns dog food - its all natural ingredients which are easily digested therefore making the poo less appealing!

Good Luck !
my cat eats it's own vomit! Eew!
ummm. that's not such a good thing. You can go to petsmart or somewhere and get medicine for that. It can get worms real fast if you keep letting it do it. Worms are not fun. Also, you might want to play it safe and go ahead and get some de-wormer too. Make sure it's the right kind fo ryur dog though, otherwise it could make it sick. Hope that helps.
Well it depends on what type of puppy it is. If it's a big dog, maybe now that he's growing more, he's getting hungrier. Try feeding him a bit more. Or, maybe it's because he wants attention, when he eats it, you yell at him or whatever, and he gets the attention he wants, whether it's negative or not.
Some dogs do this out of habit; some are missing something from their diet.

I am a breeder and ran into the same problem with my new pup a couple of months ago; the only one I had to EVER do this. I bought her some Deter and crushed the pill up in her food everyday & after that no more poo eating! The deter said that if the regular doseage doesn't work to double it & every so often give another dose to make sure they don't start back. After a month of the Deter she doesn't go near her stools anymore!
you don't feed it enough, and why do they lick their bollo*ks after eating?
Have you tasted dogfood...?
if there is some thing that is not in the puppys diet that he needs the pup will do that because there is some thing that he or she is needing and he is not getting it in his food check with the local vet and ask them...
Dogs can do some pretty disgusting things, and poop eating – also known as coprophagia – probably tops that list. You may have noticed that your dog has a taste for cat feces (either found outside or fresh out of the litterbox). Some dogs even eat their own stool, right after eliminating. While this isn't necessarily bad for them, it can be harmful if they ingest cat litter or the stool of another animal that contains harmful parasites. Aside from that, it's just plain disgusting and not becoming of our canine friends.

Why Does My Dog Eat Poop?
There are several factors that can result in coprophagia. It can be seen in dogs who are hyper and immature in nature, simply because they are bored, and are driven to keep themselves busy. Dogs raised in filthy environments (pet stores, unscrupulous breeders or previous owners) are likely to eat their own feces simply because they have a need to be rid of it, and it becomes a learned behavior. Some believe that particularly dominant dogs will eat the stool of other dogs in order to remove their scent from the territory. Coprophagia seems to be most common in hunting, working and herding breeds.

Don't Rub His Nose In It.
Coprophagia might be a learned behavior. Rubbing your dog's nose in a pile of his own feces as a method of housetraining can teach him that the presence of feces is bad, and he'll develop a habit of eating it in order to avoid punishment.

How do I get my dog to stop eating his own poop (or random dog poop he finds outside)?
The best way to prevent a dog from eating his or other dogs' feces is to clean it up as soon as possible, without making a fuss or otherwise calling attention to the act of cleaning. If you're walking your dog, clean up after him immediately (you should be doing that anyway!). If your dog has free reign of the backyard throughout the day, be sure to pick up poop on a daily basis.

If you have an indoor dog, be sure you are taking him outside on a frequent, regular basis. Dogs have an instinctive drive to keep their environment free of any smells that will attract predators – and if they have to poop inside due to your forgetting to take them out, they will sometimes eat their own poop as a way of acting on this instinct.

There is a product on the market called “For-bid”. When mixed in a dog’s food, Forbid is tasteless. However, once it is digested and excreted in the stool it is exceptionally foul tasting! This of course only works for dogs who eat their own stool. Talk to your veterinarian about this product.

Good luck.
Dogs are dogs and dogs are scavengers and if it smells good to them-they are goning to eat it. Most of the time there is no medical reason for it-dogs are just dogs. Keep the stool picked up as much as possible and teach him the leave it command.
sounds like he needs wormed
wanna say first, michelle lynn you are an anorak!

All puppies do silly things, put a nappy on it, can't eat it then can it?
your puppy is likely to be lacking something from his diet that he is trying to get from his poop. I have owned and bred dogs with my mother for 21 years and most dogs I have known do this at some point. I think it becomes a bit of a habit too. I noticed it was mainly large breeds of dogs that done this, such as dobermans. Its a natural part of them, make sure their diet is as complete as possible, speak to your vet for advise otherwise just clean the poop up as often as possible to break the habit. After all rabbits can eat their poop up to 3 times to get all the nutrition out of the food they ate in the first place!
my dog used to do this all the time someone told me it was a vitamin deficiency so i gave him vitalin dried dog food mixed with tinned dog food and he stopped
all puppys do it my dog who is 2 eats my cats poo out of the cat litter tray dont worry it is in there nature
Young dogs have this gross habit. he does it because its fresh and edible and he can eat it and that reasoning applies to pretty much everything wierd that dogs eat like vomit and grass and toilet paper and so on.
He will grow out of it but in the meantime you need to stop him from doing it and clean away the poo straight away.
