Chocolate + dog?
Answers:
no its not lethal but chocolate is not good for a dog to have it all the time i gave my last dog chocolate he loved it i use to say to him sing for chocolate and he would start to bark and howl after a while he got very sick ended up he got a tumer from it I've never forgiven myself for that so no its not lethal but its not healthy a bit like smoking
not enough to hurt the dog.
Call your vet - plan on going there RIGHT NOW
Wow! Yah Chocolate can make a dog very sick! Some dogs react differently to the chocolate, My suggestion is take your dog to the vet and make sure that everything is ok. If you don't want to do that, watch for unusual behavior, eating habits, and bowel movements.
The dog will be ok, don't worry.
Get to a vet if you see your dog behaving erratically or acting off colour. 85% cocoa are the words that ring alarm bells. If it was dark chocolate then it is more toxic to their systems. Keep a close eye on him and ring your vet for advice and do it now.
Take him to the vet if you are concerned.
And if you have a dog that small, there is no excuse for him to get into things like this. put chocolate UP where he can't reach it.
ask the vet!!
no matter where you are, there should be an emergency vet within driving distance of you. Best to make sure.
It doesn't sound like the dog got enough to hurt it. But just to be safe I would call the vet and explain over the phone. I'm sure everything is okay though. My dog has gotten into oreos before and she ended up being just fine.
Call your vet if your dog eats chocolate to discuss whether treatment or monitoring in the hospital are warranted.
If it eats alot. If it ate a little the most that will happen is it will possibly get sick.
1/4 oz you're prob ok,1/4 lb get help. Choc is really dangerous for dogs. English Mustard diluted to consistency of milk poured into side of mouth, only a couple of teas. needed to induce vomiting. If your dog has only had one square don't worry.
call the vet, usually they will have a number for an emergency vet hospital that is open 24 hours that you can go to or call and they'll be able to tell you what to do
I have heard that chocolate can be lethal but all my dogs have eaten lots and never had any ill effects.
Don't worry, my Golden Lab ate a whole box of quality street (wrappers and all!) and showed no sign of illness!
Usually the problem with chocolate is when they eat it continuously over a period of time. I've yet to see one kill over after one splurge.
Keep an eye on him. Check for pinkness around the eyes, and pink gums. If they start to change to gray, rush him to a vet.
If you're terribly worried, you can give him Ipecac syrup so he'll vomit it up.
Don't worry - I think your dog will be okay.
My dog took a Snickers bar from me and ate it - including the wrapper.he was fine. Your dog might have temporary bathroom problems, but nothing he can't get over by himself.
Go to the vet and get him checked. Even a small dose can be LETHAL! Go to the vet now!
Watch the dog. My Italian Greyhound ate an ENTIRE BOX of double-chocolate chocolate chip cookies one day. The vet just told us to watch her - she had very bad emesis and diahhrea which was her system getting rid of the toxins. She's fine now. I would watch the dog but also call the vet when they open. Good luck!
dont worry mine ate a king sized mars bar and was fine, it just stink when they fart and was a bit sloppy on the way out
Hi,
Chocolate is fatal to dogs. There is no antidote for chocolate poisoning.
It is urgent that you see a vet or at least speak to one as soon as possible.Your vet will have an out of hours emergency number.
There are plenty of sites on the web that will explain it for you if you do a search.
Youu can call a vet for advice and know whether it emergent, or get first aid advice..You can telephone any vet, woldwide, and not be restricted to you own are.My vet's number is (5414697788)in the USA, Oregon..It is midday here.Or use yahoo yellow pages to look up vets all over the world..Perhaps in your nearest large citiy, where they are 24 hour clinics.
Chocolate is toxic to dogs in large quanities. It contains a substance called Theobromine which dogs cannot digest. The Theobromine doesn't pass through their digestive system; instead, it stays in their body. The more chocolate they eat, the more Theobromine builds up in the dog's body until it reaches a toxic level.
If your dog has eaten chocolate, get it to the vet as soon as you can (whether it's showing symptoms or not), and take some of the chocolate with you so the vet can test to see how much Theobromine there is in it. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, cardiac problems, convulsions, and coma.
Here's the doggie text book information on it:
It is important to know just how much chocolate can produce toxic effects on your dog and that amount is one hundred to one hundred and fifty miligrams. That measurement to most does not mean much so to simplify it if you have a twenty pound dog that means to reach the level of becoming poisoned they have to eat approximately ten ounces depending on th type of chocolate. Bakers chocolate and unsweetened chocolate are harsher types for any dog to eat only because the chocolate is purer therefore they contain a higher dosage of Theobromine than the regular candy bar type chocolate.
don't worry a small amount wont hurt your dog i am a vet nurse and have 3 dogs they are always pinching the kids choc late i have never had a problem but it can be lethal there have been cases where dogs have died but it is rare i would not recommend feeding dogs choc late as the chemical compound in it can kill them don't worry if your really worried call your vet
anywhere you live there are always 24 hour clinics open i would just call and mention it so that you know what to do. also, beware of onions, they are just as bad as chocolate for dogs.
Your dog should be fine, that isn't much chocolate if you want to induce vomiting it is very easy.
I had a small dog eat about 2 hershey bars, late one night around Christmas. The vet told me to give him a capful of Hydrogen Peroxide and if he didn't vomit to give him another one and so one and so on. The dog lapped the stuff right up and after about 3 capfuls vomited his brains out and now he is fine!
So even if you dont need to do it now, it is good to know that is how you induce vomiting. Also you can always call poison control or a 24 hour vet for advice.
Chocolate is harmful to dogs, but I don't think that was enough to really hurt him, just maybe give him a stomach-ache. Just be sure it doesn't happen again. If it does, it will probably be ok, just make sure it doesn't happen too often.
No its not lethal. Don't worry.
Keep an eye on him for any signs of illness in case he is particularly allergic to any of the ingredients.
You should be aware that more chocolate is more likely to create a build up of toxins and cause a reaction but this small amount won't have a noticeable effect.
not enough to kill teh dog.if your worried look in teh yellow pages and find the emegency vets. someone is always open to hlep you!
Hi,
Your dog will be okay, I used to give my dog a square of milk chocolate every day, for 8 years, and she was fine and loved it, no ill effects, she was a German Shepherd Dog.
If you feel your dog is unwell tomorrow then take him to the vets, but he should be fine.
Not enough to harm your dog in that amount, a vet would just tell you the same and probably give you a lecture about it too, if your dog can't tolerate it he will be sick later from it, my dog is 11 years old and every single week since we've had her she has had 6 Maltesers and its never done her any harm, I think if you give your dog large quantities of chocolate its bad for them but a little bit like your dog ate won't harm him and I bet hes still licking his lips now the scallywag, hope your feeling less stressed now.
