We have found a racing pigeon?

A pigeon had been hanging around on our front garden for a few days with tags on his legs and was in danger of being eaten by a cat. We caught him and have put him in our large ferret pen (we dont have a ferret anymore) someone has told us to keep him for 2 days feed him corn and then release him but someone else has told us to keep him for 4 days before we release him. The ferret pen is quite large but he cant acually fly around in it so has anyone any advice to what i should do with him? I am not sure if he should be fed just before i release him either? He will have to fly about 60 miles to get home, Is this a big journey for a pigeon?

Answers:
Keep him two days. Feed him. Keep him a day more. Release him.
That way he's rested, been fed, had time to get rid of the food (poo) should he normally do that or else keep it and store it, then he's ready.
60 miles isn't too bad. Think about it - if you take a long car ride, you stop off if it's a bit long. So will he.
birds can survive flying more than 60 km.
Contact the RSPCA or perhaps a racing pigeon organisation (if there is such a thing, try searching the net). They may have a way of tracing the owner and in the meantime will give you advice on the best way to look after him/her. Good Luck
keep him for 2 weeks and he's yours. let him fly and he goes back to you. oh don't forget to put on his helmet, he's racing right?
It is not good to eat as the meat is too hard, even with garden peas . . . :-)
Just keep it one or two days as it will keep rest. Allow it to have water and cereal in a quiet place. After that it will fly again to its goal.
If you can, add a message at its leg to indicate it stopped flying from date to date.
If you really don't feel confortable with that, just call a pigeon organization.
you should release him after 3 days i think..and about the 60 miles, don't worry..he can handle it..but if you feed him before you release, he sure will appreciate it.
http://www.ifpigeon.com/ click the link that says lost and found. It will tell you exactly what to do for the bird.
Pigeon races are usually much more than 60 miles, often several hundred, and sometimes from other countries. The following site might help.
http://www.rpra.org/
If it has a number on the rings a homing pidgeon association may be able to help.
Get the numbers from the rings and contact your local pigeon racing club. They will contact the owner who will either collect it or ask you to ring its neck. Birds that break their flights like this really aren't much good.
Racing pigeons can handle up to 600 miles in a day, so if he's in decent shape, 60 miles is just a quick training toss.

I wouldn't feed him the morning of the release, but I would make sure he had water if he wants it.

If you'd like to find out more about racing homers for yourself, if only for interest because they are a blast and really interesting birds, you might want to contact the American Racing Pigeon Union if you're in the U.S. at http://www.pigeon.org and ask for their beginner's booklet.

The number of days to hold depends more on his condition than on any particular limit of time. If he looks bright eyed, healthy, and ready to go, then 2 days is fine. If he's been flown down (tired looking, feathers a bit ragged or fluffed out looking and it's not cold, then hang onto him for four or more days till he's looking good.)

I'm presuming since you're apparently using the word corn as a N. American would to mean maize (which is what some of the Brits might say), then, yeah, popcorn is ideal (NOT the stuff from a bag full of that grease they use on the microwave crap, but just plain popcorn -unpopped)
good
