How long is it reasonable to expect a dog to be able to contain their toilet urge?
Answers:
A healthy dog and even some puppies from 3 months can be expected to hold it for 8-10 hours at night.
However the day is different because the animal moves around and is active. Another factor is the animals age. Generally an hour a month of age for a puppy and then when the dog is adult most can hold it between a morning and evening walk.
This is not possible for all dogs as some have weaker bladders and smaller dogs have a quicker turn around after they drink.
my dog goes for a walk every 8-9 hours, but that depends on the size of the dog. the larger the dog the bigger his bladder. So a big dog needs to go a few times for a walk. "Frodo"-American cocker spaniel (my dog) has lasted 13 hours without going out once or twice (because of my work). If your dog is small (like a terrier) must go for a walk about 5 times a day to be happy and healthy.
My dog's medium-sized (33 lb) and can go all night with no problem. During the day if I know she hasn't had an exceptional amount to drink I don't think twice about leaving her for 5 hours.
Your first answerer has said she has left her poor dog 13 hours while she was at work, I wonder how many times she had a wee in that time!!!??
I have never left my dogs during the day for more than 4 hours, of course most adult dogs can 'hold it' longer than that as the majority last all night but during the day it is slightly different as they don't sleep all the time so ideally they should at least have access to a garden every 4/5 hours!
how long can u wait
it depends if ur dog is trained, if u train them to go outside and u leave them all day they will wait. Our dogs can hold it for around 12 hours or more. It also depends how active the dog is.
no longer than you would. I would say, as long as the dog goes to the toilet, then 3 hours is about the limit for an adult dog. Much less for a puppy of course.
It varies from dog to dog, as it would from person to person. Some need to go every few hours, some can last much longer.
When my work situation changed I was forced to leave my dog for longer than I had done before. I now walk him last thing before leaving for work and first thing on my return, 9hrs later. He's never had an accident and doesn't always do much on his afternoon walk anyway. Other dogs might not cope with this.
Even I have to confess it isn't ideal.
I'd say if you can gradually build up the the time a dog has to wait it will be more likely to be able to hold on for longer, but it's much better still if you can walk it frequently.
