Horse traing, whats the best way?

whilst lunging is beneficiary to your mare - she will still find it easier to understand your commands from her back - what you need to do is practice practice practice!! I find with young horses the easiest place to ask them for a canter is when you're deep in a corner - their balance comes easier to them here. Sit up very straight and squeeze with your legs - if need be reinforce this command with a quick flick of a whip behind your girth - not a slap - just a tap. When she strikes off on the correct leg - praise her immediately and pat her. Repeat this exercise over and over until she grasps what you are asking of her.
If she strikes off on the wrong leg - pull her up immediately without speaking. She will associate praise with the correct leg over time and you'll be surprised at how fast horses learn!! Smaller 20 meter circles are a better exercise than going down the long side of the arena also as they have less room to think about misbehaving and as a rider you will find it easier to concentrate and work your horse.
Basically like any thing else with horses - you need to have time and patience with her - praise her when she does right. I hope you're cantering away happily soon! xx
Try lunging her at a canter with the saddle on. Ground work is always helpful before you get on.
Lunge her. It always helps. If you put poles in front of her while she is cantering on the lungeline She will have to think where shehas to put her feet. Ground work is the best thing you can do 4 her.

GOOD LUCK ")
time, Patience, love, and you could try lunging her first without a saddle, then add the saddle, and eventually you could ask a smaller person with experience around horses to ride her while lunging at a canter. Also use encouraging voices!
as the other people have stated, lunging. the trick with a good steady canter is leg extention, in the horses part. have you had her vetted? does your saddle fit properly, make sure it dosent pinch and dont hold her back too much in canter, you get a rocking horse motion if you do that. and remember to enjoy what your doing with your horse, if you are having fun, shes having fun.
Hi
I say just lunge her and she wll soon trot
My mare had canter problems when she was a youngster and I agree with everything that Pamela O says, however you also must ensure that you are applying the aids in a clear and consistent manner. A lesson with a reputable instructor would probably do you both the world of good. Good luck and don't forget it's supposed to be fun!
I agree that lunging with and without a rider is helpful. I also think that it is worth taking her to an equestrian centre for a few lessons with an instructor - or see if there is a freelance instructor working in your area. They will show you the best way to work with your horse and get to the root of any problems. I had to do this with a 3 year old once and it really helped.
