What brand is the healthiest dog food to buy?
A majority of the time my dog has a little of what we eat, within reason, to go with her complete dried food, but occasionally I feed her with a ready made wet food. I have recently bought a brand which says it contains at least 60% meat, which made me think of what the others contain.
I have looked at other brands (including the premium lines of the best sellers) and I am shocked to see they contain only an avarage of 4% meat!
So I ask - what is the healthiest wet dog food out there?
Answers:
Pedigree Chum my bum!! It contains 4% of meat, so the rest is crap and water basically! As do all of the foods you can buy in the supermarket.I don't know why they're still legal, but they prey on the ignorant to keep them in business.so wise up, this is your dog we are talking about!
I feed my German Shepherd Nature Diet (www.naturediet.co.uk gives you info all about it). It's about 80% meat, and the rest is rice and vegetables.it's totally pure, steam cooked and I'd feel happy eating it. It's not as cheap as the tinned crap, but why would it be? If you care about your dog, you wouldn't cut corners with their diets! The tinned crap can cause them to moult all year round, gain or lose weight unnecessarily, and give them behavioural difficulties. It's no different from a child being fed McDonalds and sweets full of E numbers all the time.it would have a detrimental effect!
Dried food is also good for your dog, because it helps their teeth, and can also help to stop any tummy problems, or runny poo's etc.but I personally think it's a bit unnatural and processed, so I only serve it as a "side order", rather than a main meal. Would you eat dried chicken? I certainly wouldn't. The best dried food I've come across is Hill's Science Plan.it's not cheap, but it's mostly meat, and no artifical ingredients like many of the "highstreet" brands.
i think its PAL!
Get Butchers. It is free from all additives and preservatives. Is all natural and we feed it to our dog who needs a gluten free diet. It ain't badly priced either.
The brand that I give my dog is Wysong(The Thinking Person's Pet Food). First five ingrediants are: Chicken, chicken giblets, ground corn, ground wheat, and ground brown rice. See www.wysong.net
Dogs love Butchers tinned food. Does stink a bit though. My dog has a dicky tummy and gets blocked anal glands. So she's had to go on to a very expensive kibble upon the advice of my vet. Poor thing wasn't well this weekend and the vet put her on boiled rice for 3 days. She was disgusted!
Innova, wellness, california natural, solid gold these are all good dog foods and made with all natural ingrediants. They may be a bit more expensive but they are safer and better to feed your dog. These foods do not have the diseased decayed rotten euthanized rendered animals in them (including rotten road kill)
canned food is okay to feed your dog but a dog needs dry kibble also in order to strengthen his teeth. I'll feed mine things i eat also, but watch out for salty, greasy foods as this can cause pancreitis.
When I want to give the dog a treat I get Alpo, other than that I just give it purina for it's age group: eg. I started it on Purina puppy chow and have worked up. I gave it puppy chow for two years.
Iams Dried food is as good as they come.
Mix a bit of mince in and some onion.
Try a bit of gravy also
Your dog will wolf it down
james wellbeloved, i will not give my dog anything else but it , they have turkey or lamb but it more expensive than most brands but well worth it as it satisfies him , and dont use pedigree, have you seen what they put into it ! good luck
I am in Canada and I give my little maltese Orjin..it is the best dog food for a dog..it has everything she needs,,from chicken to veggies.and she loves it..I do sometimes share a little of what I am having as well but that to her is a very special treat..
natural choice!! lots of vitamins and minerals..absolutely not eukanuba or iams...eukanuba uses lots of animal fats.bad for your dogs intergestion..vets have found that dogs who have eaten IAMS for a majority of their life..develop serious or mild cancers.my dog had that. belive me IAMS isnt good. Natural choice might be a little hard to find..depending what state you are living in.i live in new york..so if ur by me u can find it! wet food is okay but not as healthy as dry..i say stick to the dry! also you can try talking to your vet or a animal professional to help you!
The healthiest wet dog food out there doesn't come in a can. Go to your local butchers and ask for their red meat offcuts, try to get some bones in there too because they are the best thing for dog's teeth. Offcuts from the butcher shop are usually reasonably priced too so you won't be spending a fortune on a brand name. Also, feeding dogs off your table isn't good for their health, it also creates bad habits. Dog's weren't meant to eat human food.
Beneful seems really good- you can see the meat and veggies in it.
Our vet said 1/3 of our dog's diet should be table scraps!
Every person has there own opinion to what food is best, i recently had an issue with my own dog as she was loosing weight and not getting the nutrition that she really needed because of the food she was getting, asking my vet many questions about quailty and the advantages of diferent diets and brands. i asked about B.A.R.F (bones and raw food) diets, pal iams eukanuba royal canin science diet ect ect. and was told that for best price and quality as it is a mid range premium food Supercoat (dryfood) was best as it is a reasonably affordable price as it has the right requirements for a healthy diet with 22% protein 10% fat (which are the daily requirements for a dog) good calcium to phosphorus ratio, and vitamins needed. in the canned food best for value was natures gift as it has less preservatives than most canned food and is 70% meat. B.A.R.F diets are hard to balance meals and only should be used if you know what requirements and use vitamin supliments. DO NOT use the prepacked rolls of meat and butchers pet minces as they are packed with preservatives and there is no limit to what they can put in it to keep it fresh, they can put asernic in it and not have to list it, with minces for pets if its not for human consumption then its safe to say that its not really good for your pet.
so for a balanced and healthy diet i recomend supercoat dryfood and the natures gift canned, but also remember that alot of caned food is up to 70% water and isnt really value for money
Hills Science!

I don't ever use wet dog food.it is nasty stuff. I feed my two retired Greyhounds dry Old Roy high performance from Walmart. It has high protein % and they have done VERY WELL on it. Greyhounds have very sensitive tummy's so I have to be very carefull with what I feed them. The get NO table food as well. The only other brand/type of food that they are good on is Purina One either beef&rice or lamb&rice.
Science Diet. It is what all of the vets reccomend.
Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. If you want to learn more check out: http://www.sagekeep.com/petfood.htm. www.api4animals.org/facts?p=35. more=1 http://animalark.eapps.com/animal/petfoo.
I believe Canine Caviar pet foods are superior in quality to other pet foods available on the market today, and we think you will agree. Lamb & Pearl Millet Adult dog food is an all-natural holistic formula that uses human grade meats and grains.

Royal Canin, this is the best food for your dog. It gives them all the nutrients they need,,, and even comes with a measuring cup so you know how much to give what breed and age of dog, we usually give our dog some of this and then rotate the additional bits we put in his bowl. For example; cooked chicken breast, gravy, stewed steak (his fave), cheese. You get the point, the extra bits are for a change, coz our dog looses interest in his bowl if every time he is fed it looks the same.
my dog eats dry food every day. For her treat/something different I give her either boiled white fish with boiled rice or some boiled chicken. she loves it and it doesn't upset her stomach the way some of those tins do.it's a lot easier on our noses as well..lol
My westie says natures:menu is the best wet dog food and he is always jumping for joy when i open the sachet it has about 60% to 80% of real meat and is about 65p a sachet in a pet shop e.g pets at home.
hills, eukanuba or pedigree chum. x
