In the summer my dog becomes very itchy - no fleas - any home cures?
Answers:
Well you need to figure out what's making him itchy. It could be anything from fleas (I know you say he doesn't have fleas but even the guaranteed Advantix and Frontline's aren't ridding fleas 100% this year) or allergies.
My best suggestion is to give your dog Benedryl and Fish Oil capsules. If his itch is allergy related, the Benedryl will help some of it. The Fish Oil is an Omega Fatty Acid which helps with moisture in the skin to help rid itch and increase the likelyhood of a healthy coat.
You may also consider weekly or bi-weekly baths with an oatmeal based shampoo. Oatmeal is good to help moisturize the skin and will also help "lock in" moisture already in the skin (since itching is often caused by dryness of the skin).
evening primrose oil and regular brushes. also the odd hose down.
Might be an alergy, pollen or summat, anti hystamines for dogs ?
how old is your dog? better try shampoo and olive oil.
Give him a hose down, when it's hot. They may not sweat, but they sure do get hot....
try cod liver oil in its food.
It may be reacting to the sunshine, this helps its skin and coat
My dog has the same thing. It's a skin allergy, and very easy to treat. I use a dog shampoo that i got from my vet called. Relief. it has oatmeal in it and it works great!! She doesn't scratch anymore and her coat it really shiny and soft. :)
He could have seasonal allergies. You might want to try bathing him with a tea tree oil shampoo for dogs. Its very soothing to their skin/moisturizing. Also a suggestion could be giving him a vitamin supplement, with omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins. Hopefully with the use of these you will notice some relief for him.also too much bathing will only dry out the skin more!
All of the above and consider this.. When does the dog get his vaccinations? Vaccinations can make a dog itch.

I have the same problem with my dog.
She definitely does not have fleas but I have now found out what it is - sand and soil!
Seriously, if you dog it going out in the garden and lying on the grass or soil, it is irritating the skin. I have sand and soil in my garden as I am having it landscaped and she prefers to lie on it in the summer as it is warm out and the soil and sand are cool on her skin.
Brush his/her hair daily (preferably at night time) and bath only briefly every month.
It may be allergies or a skin problem of some sort. Check your dogs skin thoroughly and try and find the cause. If you can't find anything give your dog a bath and use sensitive skin shampoo or oatmeal shampoo. In the summer there are a lot of bugs, and though it may not be fleas, mosquitos and gnats can also make dogs itch. K9 Advantix protects against mosquitos. If the problem perisists ask your vet.
