My 12yr old dog is constipated, can I give her...?
a little cooked cabbage to help? The shops are far and closed and I don't think it an emergency yet for her to be taken to the vets.
She isn't over weight and is a cairn terrier.
Answers:
Give her canned pumpkin. For a Cairn, about 3 Tablespoons mixed with something she really likes, such as canned dog food..
Or, if she has no corn allergies, 1/4 cup of canned creamed corn will move things along..
She can also have Metamucil.just sprinkle over her food..
I wouldn't recommend cooked cabbage, as it is too gassy, and may cause serious bloat.
It probably wouldnt do her any harm if you gave her that.
Our vet told us to use canned pumpkin, it works for us. You do no have to give your dog much either.
how do you know shes constipated? what is she doing?
Give your dog kaeopectate
Yes, cabbage is okay as is any other vegetable, it's a good thing to include vegetables in a dog's diet. In the short term and to make the dog feel more comfortable, a dose of liquid paraffin won't hurt.
Canned pumpkin is the best for that.
I had this problem years ago with my dog. He didn't poop for 3 days and so we took him to the vet. He said this:
"I could give you a medication that would cost $45 or you can give him about a cup of prune juice"
He then gave me a large syringe (without the needle) we gave him the prune juice, and in about 20 minutes he was pooping like a king!
Had a cat that was plugged up too, gave him a small dose of prune juice and he was just fine!
She will fart like a warhorse if you feed her gabbage, try codliver oil it works for chickens.
Be sure she is constipated and doesn't have an intestinal blockage. If she has a bloated stomach and is in any pain, phone the vet for advice immediately. They can also advise on the best way to treat constipation.
Its very unusual for a dog to become constipated and I'd be suspicious if it happened.
