What is the best way to get over the death of a beloved pet?
My gorgeous little cat died on June 23rd this year (six weeks on Friday) and I thought I was handling it quite well. Just lately though I have been thinking of her more and more and even though I have her ashes with me I still miss her so much. Is getting another cat the answer or can anybody tell me how they coped with the loss of their pet. Thank you!

I'm so sorry for your loss! when my cat daisy was knocked down by a car i was absolutely crushed, some people don't understand that losing an animal can be so painful. i got my cat mortimer shortly afterwards and it did help in the long term but i found it quite hard at first. you won't forget but the pain will slowly go. do whatever feels right, if you feel ready to get another cat then do as you must miss that companionship. p.s ignore the twattish comments left by a couple of others, you always get them on here!
Get a new one.
Just time. It's like any other injury, time helps the pain to be less every day.
Getting another pet fills the void. Go out and get yourself a cute little kitten.
just get urself a nu lovely cat
My little Kitty Honeycomb got put to sleep! I got over it by getting a bird!
you might want another pet to help yo ubut first try to save a cat that you might find and if there aren't any strays then go to the pet store. no cat can ever take the place of your old one but you can have another kitty friend to help you cope.
that's tough.. I am so sorry.
it gets easier with time; when you get to the place where you can remember that sometimes she annoyed you, or you can laugh at something silly you remember her doing, you are healing.
Whether to get another cat ( or even a dog) it might help. it might not.
at least you wold have company.
get a fish
Getting another cat is the best way to extinguish the sorrow that you feel for the cat that you lost. It's not going to work immediately but once you create memories with the new kitten you will start to feel much better. Best of luck to you, I hope you feel better!
Get rid of the ashes that is rediculous. Then, get over it. Its just an animal. If you sit and lament and dwell on the dead cat it will just drive you crazy and you will never get over it. If you have tons of pictures and stuff all over in commoration, get rid of that too(or at least put them away in a box or something), not all of them, keep one or two if you really need. Get a new cat.
Get a snake and feed it some beer. It will slither this way and that. It will be all f***ed up. That should keep you entertained and help you to forget about your loss.
get you another cat. You may not feel like it right now, but trust me. Caring for a new one will help keep your mind off of things and soon you will have a new beloved pet!
My condolences. It always hurts, that hole in your ;heart. Know your kitty is waiting for you, perfect, healthy and beautiful on the other side of the rainbow bridge. (do a search on that)
Hugs.
Time is what you need. Pets have become a very big part of some people's lives. Just let time heal your broken heart.
A new kitten won't ever take the place of your other cat, but it may help. It will have its own personality, and maybe that will give you something else to love. Your other cat will always have a place in your heart, but this one will help fill the emptiness.
I'm sorry. :-( I dealt with this a couple years ago myself. I didn't even get to say goodbye or keep ashes or anything like that since I was at school (college) when it happened.
I have new cats now that I just recently adopted. They remind me so much of my old cat that I don't know that getting a new one right away would be the best idea.
I pretty much just dealt with it like loosing anyone else. I was upset, I cried, I talked about him and then worked on moving on. I had had him since I was 4, so it was really weird to not have him around.
I've got 2 ways that I have gotten over my pets, one I got from a Scary movie =)
1. Bury your own. Knowing that my dogs ar5e buried and gone helps the reality set in. And the last thing I can do is make sure they're taken care of myself.
2. Got another dog. Humans are the dominant species on the planet, animals need us for protection from other humans. If for any reason, help an animal for all the happiness you got from your first pet. There's nothing wrong with getting another.
No one can tell you for sure. I think it would help to spend a little bit of time with people that have cats. Or you could volunteer at a shelter that has cats and other animals. That way there is no real commitment and if you decide on another cat you could alomost easily get one and probably for cheap.
I feel for you. After losing my dog late last yr., I thought I'd never get another pet. I finally did get another dog (different breed), and she's been a joy for me. But, even now, there are times when I think of and miss my other dog. I guess it all just takes time. I wish you luck.
get a new cat or a new boyfriend, change ur life routine keep urself busy u'll forget about him or her..
It's hard losing a pet you've become so attached to. I think the best medicine for that is to go get another pet to love and take care of after you've given a short amount of time to grieving the loss of this one. I'm sorry about your loss.
Bury the ashes in your garden (or a friends garden). Stop concentrating on the loss, just remember the joy and love your friend brought into your life.
If need be, get another cat, but don't expect the new pet to be an instant replacement for your old pet.
I know it hurts, I lost my cat about 12 weeks ago, I miss him, like I miss his mother and my first cat who died 15 years ago, but you must move on. Live your life and be happy, your cat would want you to be happy.
My sister is going through the same thing. She just had to put her 17 year old dog to sleep and she misses him deeply. She is getting another dog similar in size, color and shape. Also she is getting the family to write little stories they remember about him and putting together photos to make a scrapbook. She also has his ashes on the Mantle- she's only had them for about 5 days. Time is the only thing that will help heal the wound.
Sorry to hear of your loss.
It is hard to get over a pet because they become part of the family.
You will always miss her but the pain will fade away.
Why don't you visit your local cat rescue sanctuary, you can give a loving home to another cat that needs it.
You will be helping yourself and giving a cat a home.
My cat also died last year. I was very sad for a while but I just thought of all the great times I had with her. I also got a new dog and had a great big funeral for my cat. Every weekend to go to her grave and spread catnip on it. These methods helped me think about how happy she probably is in heaven right now.
I recommend repeated sex therapy with an Italian American in his 40's, that is from South Central Pa. and is named Joe. but that is how I would handle it if I were you. No,,, really, cuddling and letting the grief flow is the best way. Cry it out.
Hrmm.well, I talked on the phone to my boyfriend for three hours for DAYS.and my friends took me shopping.and my parents bought me two new kittens!
But really.I know I haven't gotten over her, and I feel like I can't connect with my kittens because I still want my old cat back. Buying a new pet isn't going to help, really, because you'll still be connected to the old pet, and you won't be able to be as close to your new pet.
Don't get me wrong.I love my kitties! But I don't have the same relationship with them that I had with my Shadow. :(
When I lost my puppy Dilinger who I had for over 10yrs. It was hard. So the best thing for me was to get an adult dog similar in features and in attitude in every way. There is always room to love again.
get a new kitten:)
let yourself mourn, getting another cat before you are over this one isn't fair to you or that new cat. give yourself time.
