Well if you cat is outdoors, it maybe looking for something to eat or a member of the opposite sex. If it is scared it maybe hiding. Or maybe someone took it in thinking it needed a good home. Animals also get hit by cars. If it is in your house it could be hiding from you. I'm sure if it knows you are going to feed it, it may come out.

Cat's are independant creatures, I know of cats who have disappeared for weeks then return when they feel like it, likely it's been getting food somewhere else, they're not loyal animals at all
