Just acquired an alexandrine parakeet, dont know the first thing about them...any tips out there?
Answers:
depends on your bird. Alex's are neat birds, in my opinion. I've hand fed a few and currently have three yearlings.
mine LOVE fruits and veggies. i give them soaked monkey chow and a millet diet. occasionally, they get sunflower seeds. they are in a large cage outside (it's summer here) and about every other day, i take the hose and give them a bath. they love it! they do like to chew so make sure you give them plenty to chew on (i use branches from some of my trees, they go through those in a week).
they're not squawky like some conures but aren't quiet. they like to mock my whistle. i had one years ago, a female, who talked.
they are sexually dimorphic. males have a ring on the back of his neck, females do not. they are the largest of the ring-neck parakeet family.
congrats on your new friend! i wish you well
you're more than welcome to email me with any other questions or concerns. I'd be more than happy to help out :)

Don't put your finger into the cage until your sure it don't bite cos they hurt like hell
Nearly all of them are called "Polly" not too sure why this is?
Don't forget to feed him, or he will chew on you
Where are you located at? I may be able to put you in contact with someone who breeds them and they can teach you how to care for them.

i have just lost mine after 15 great years with her. So to answer your question, a good quality sunflower seed mix with dried fruits & nuts fresh daily. carrot, and other veg is good for them. Keep the claws clipped be careful not to cut them too short or they will bleed. Daily light spray with loop warm water, try to tame slowly as they have one hell of a bite. Will be a lovely companion and may talk if you are patient. Enjoy your pet.
