Old age produces middle-aged spread, just as in humans.An 11 year old needs plenty of walking exercise, to keep her girlish figure..She might do best on a good senior diet. Canidae, Innova, Solid Gold, Wellness and Wysong all make great senior diets with extra ingredients for bone and joint health..
Cairns have a wide margin of weights, so it is impossible to tell the fitness of your dog without seeing her.. You would know best if she is the same size as when she was in her prime, at about 5 years old.. she should try to maintain that weight..
Well at 11 she is older and should weight alittle more than normal but she sounds like she is overweight.
The breed standards call for a female to be 13 pounds and be about 9 1/2 inches tall at the shoulder and be about 15 inches long on the body.
If she is bigger than that she couldweight more but not by that much.
Well.. 11 is older. My over active cairn is 15 lbs. I think that is fine. If you cant feel her ribs change her diet to Science Diet. If u need more help email me. :) I will be happy to help.

Average weight for an adult Cairn Terrier is 20 pounds. I wouldnt worry about it. My Cairn doesnt eat that much either. And, if you research the dog you will see they are required to eat only 1/2 to 1 cup a day of food. Walk her more if your worried about her weight.
my female cairn stayed heavy after her pregnancy and became heavier as she got older, even though she did'nt eat any more. But she was less active as arthritis set in after she had the pups. Maybe it's hormonal mixed with old age. you could try encouraging her to exercise more by taking her for more frequent walks. my girl lived to be 13.
My cairn passed away a couple of months ago she was spayed at around 8 months old and was 15 1/2 years old when she died. Her weight for most of her life was around 14lbs and she was never a big eater either. They are great little dogs to have and i really miss her.
