Why has my cat stopped being as affectionate ?

I have had my cat for about a year now and he is about a year and a half old. He used to snuggle up on my lap most evenings and wherever I was in ther house he would follow me around and be very affectionate. In the last few weeks he has started spending all day outside and when he does come in, he doesn't come and sit on my lap any more or approach me to be stroked and fussed. Is he just growing up ? Or is it because he has been spending so much time outside and doesn't need the attention as he isn't bored ?

Your cat obviously hates you. Don't let it in the house while you sleep as it may chew off a finger or two. Happened to one of my friends. We call him Nub.
Because it dont like you
Maybe he just now realized that he's a cat and must therefore be more evil, as all cats are.
Is he fixed? You shouldn't let him out unless he is.

Cats are fickle. If someone else feeds them or gives them attention, why should they need it from you?

Keep him inside, and he'll be more happy with you, rather than the outside world.

I've got 4 cats, and they wax and wane as to their affectionate behavior. Smells and attitude also affect them.

Be there for your cat, and he'll be there for you.
Cat's are very fickle animals. In my experience it all depends on the cat. Some are cuddly lovable kittens and as they get older they get more independent and aren't as clingy. My cat was a cuddly kitten and got less when he matured but now that he's older (10) he's all cuddly and lovable again though he has his moments where he likes to be alone. Most ya can do is offer to pet them and see if he becomes more of a lap cat cuddle type.
it has got to an age where you dont own the cat any more IT owns you ....and you watch you will feed it when it wants feeding ..you will stroke it only when it wants attention it will cry at you to get up and let it out and you will...Now think who is the pet you or it
cause its still trying to digest orangedogs hamster
i have 2 sometimes they want nothing to do with me other times they are under foot every time i turn around - they are both fixed and spend alot of time out side in the summer. cats are moody critters
Could be a phase..my cats go through phases of liking to be cuddled or stroked a lot, & other times being a bit more independent...If you just keep on offering him lots of fusses & strokes (ie. don't be deterred from stroking him just coz he's not purring so much etc..keep on being affectionate to him) & incentives to get on your lap (maybe a crunchy titbit reward if he does get on your lap?) then hopefully he won't grow out of the habit completely.

Also, it could be the heat...as it's warmer weather, it's now more fun for your cat to explore the garden (it's not much fun in winter when it's too cold.so he would have stayed in more with you during the winter months).and (as you said) the result of this will be he's more tired & less interested in indoor activies when he finally does come home every evening. Also, if he's too hot then your lap might just be too warm at the mo.
It's hot. Mine don't spend much time with me in the Summer.
if hes not fixed hes likely doing cat things with other cats
Same happened to me, my kitten (before( going out) used to come on my lap and have cuddles but when he was let out it stopped
Is he neutered, b ecause if he isnt, he should be---kittens have daddy cats as well as mummy cats, and there are still far too many unloved ones out there. Neutering usually makes them more affectionate and less prone to roaming about picking up diseases, or getting run over or attacked by dogs and perverts.
