Shooting of greyhounds?

The vast majority of American greyhounds retire to either stud services or adoptive homes. The number of greyhounds euthanized every year for lack of a home is miniscule compared to the number of dogs put down in shelters across the country. Additionally the popularity of greyhound racing has been on a steady decrease over the past 10 years and the number of greyhounds born annually has been dropping as well. This leads many insiders to predict a 100% retirement rate to be reached within the next 3-5 years. Don't be angry with greyhound owners, trainers, breeders, kennel personnel, etc. they power the volunteer adoption groups and many donate money to assist in a dog's placement. (Also not all adoption groups are purely volunteer organizations - many racetracks have in-house adoption coordinators on staff and a fair number of the tracks have kennel space for the retirees while they await a home.) Additionally many states regulate greyhound retirements - in Connecticut it is illegal to euthanize a greyhound for anything other than medical needs, in Massachusetts there is a state run retirement fund for the dogs, paid for out of the track's purses.
thats SOO wrong they just use them and hten kill them. Hence the reason I am working on adopting an ex-racer is I could I would adopt htem all *sighs*
The heartless murder of thousands of these animals sickens me. I am trying to start rescuing dogs and it's completely overwhelming. Everywhere you look dogs are being killed. Shelters, test labs, racing, craze's and that's just to name a few. Where do we start? I wish I could just throw up my hands but if I do that there will be even more death and I can't allow that to happen. Umm ok sorry my view is that the people who do this should suffer in a prison that I and many other animal lovers control. Enough said!
It is wrong and people do it, just with horses.
My aunt has an adopted greyhound, i dont know how you could do that. the people who do need to be smacked around a little bit.
It should be considered a criminal act. It's horrible.
In my view that should be considered murder. I like the people who are in the program to finding retired greyhounds homes for the of their life. I actully live next to a peson who adopted a retired greyhound. I see him walking all the time.
it pisses me off yes, but I'm not surprised. humans no longer surprise me with their cruelty.
we are the worst species on the planet. we use people and animals for our own enjoyment and then when we no longer need the human or animal anymore..we get rid of it.
we use animals for our own entertainment..whether that is greyhound racing, horse racing, killer whales at sea world, or elephants at circuses..its all wrong.
and it sickens me to listen to ppl say over and over again..those animal live better than most! well.i don't think so. i know d@mn well that if i was an elephant I'd rather be roaming the jungles of India.or the Savannah of Africa. if i was a killer whale id rather be swimming the depths of the ocean, if i was a greyhound I'd rather be chasing rabbits in my owners yard, and if i was a racing horse id rather gallop across an open field..but instead they are "justified" in this ignorant "freak show" because their animals are better off than most. HA! what a joke!
i hate people! one day WE will have out lived our usefulness and we will be the ones "taken out" like those poor greyhounds!
poetic justice, don't you think?
If they are just being killed because they can no longer race, then of course that is very cruel. However if they have sustained an injury from which they cannot reasonably be expected to recover and live comfortably, or they are otherwise sick, then being put down may be kinder than making them live in pain.
As long as people make money at it, this will continue to happen. It's another example of how increasing profit wins over morality. It's simply cheaper to kill them, rather than support them.
For many people, humans are the top dog, and animals are simply here for our use, which in a way is natural; but I think we've lost the respect that our ancestors had for their soon to be dinner and the ox that pulled their plow. And businesses continue to lack moral responsibilities without being checked by the public.
The more topics like these are discussed the better. It takes strong public opinion to change things, but unfortunately there does exist a majority that could care less if a dog is shot in the head.
For anyone who can adopt a greyhound, they are great pets. They really do need the right kind of homes though, that have yards. And owners willing to commit to exercising them.
I've never heard of anyone shooting them, but I suppose it is possible. Many dogs are destroyed when no one wants them anymore - that's as true for pets as for racing dogs. Greyhounds are actually luckier than many other breeds in that there are MANY people who want to rescue and adopt them. Go to www.akc.org to find out more about how to go about that.
I used to LIVE near some greyhound owners & racers, near London. They only had a little 2 bedroomed flat, but they had 3 kids AND 4 or 5 dogs at one time. Even THAT was disgusting - dogs AND kids need space! (plus it was against the rules!) But then they had dogs 'disappear' when they got a bit old . one dog ended up with another neighbour, because they liked him so much - but it turned out he had kennel cough! They obviously hadn't been treating him properly.
I've known that greyhound racers have their dogs murdered when they slow down for decades - and that horse-racers often have their losing horses turned into glue.!
Frankly, it makes me totally SICK! These people should get a taste of their own medicine . and I truly MEAN that!
My view is Animal creulty shouldn't even be happening, It sickings me to watch dog race's, bull fighting, fox hunting etc.. All for our fun, & for the exception to win money! I only could wish for world peace, But all of these things will never stop! I wish we all could snap our finger's and make things better .. Like they say only nightmare's come true.
If the animal is being put down because of illness or suffering, then its best so the animal doesnt suffer..but if they are being put down because the owner thinks they are to old or worn out to race then thats disgusting and maybe they should be shot instead!
Why dose this surprise you. Human for the most part will close their eyes to what is unpleasant. There is people out there doing a great job at rescuing some of these dogs
shooting of anything is cruel only if they over populating the earth shall we shoot or kill them
I hate cruelty, live and let live, we humans are callous animals of very low intelligence, we dont deserve the right to make these kind of decisions, it sickens and i guess frightens me!
Try pepto bismol & growing up..Correctly placed gunshot works INSTANTLY!
I think a lot of people turn a blind eye to a lot of the cruelty thats going on in this world(hence the immature answer youv had off some prat)Id like to see how some people would react if they actully seen it with their own eyes.Maybe if they saw the terror in the animals eyes theyd think twice. It doesnt give anyone the right to take an animals life.Ive seen a few web sites showing animal cruelty and i couldnt believe that this sort of cruelty was going on.It sickened me to think that people were capable of this.Id love to see the terror in their eyes that ive seen in those poor animals.
I think it is cruel and sickening. Its sooo wrong!
