The kids (angels that they are) wanted a pet, hey new sofa cost a few a grand so cats and dogs outta bounds for a couple of years. Fish. how hard can they be to look after? Stick 'em in, feed 'em. You know..then Poooo..ahhhhh: I've got a ladel and a bucket. That'll do.

Gravel vacuums are fairly inexpensive at places like wal mart. They can be well worth the expense as you will learn that the puddles from bailing with buckets are not worth saving a few bucks. Change about 25% of the water once a week with aged tap water. Don't worry about any missed poop. Tanks develop beneficial bacteria that digest the fish poop (ammonia) and turn it into nitrites. Other bacteria turn the nitrites into less harmful nitrates. The water changes keep the nitrates from reaching toxic levels. If there is large amounts of poop visible in your tank, you are definitely feeding too much. Fish should never be full, find out how much they can eat in a minute and only feed about half of that every day.

What type of fish do you have? Just clean the tank. Put in a filter as well. It should be just fine.

fish are eesy to maintain start with goldfish get a filter this keeps the water cleaner for longer no need for a bucket feed them sparingly but two times a day
you can buy an aquarium battery operated suction cleaner u know,theyre good i had one beats swirling a ladel about n making pooh soup.which can also kill your fish u know because of the chemicals in the pooh.go buy one soon
Fish lovely. I could watch them all day swimming round their tank. Very relaxing, plus you don't have to take it for a walk when it's chucking it down outside.
if you are having tropical fish, you can get a fish that eats all the cr*p in the tank and keeps it clean
The fish dumps settle to the bottom. Once every couple of days or so, you can "vacuum" up the dumpings using a siphon. I used a plastic thing attached to plastic tubing, which I emptied into a bucket. I would run it around in the gravel at the bottom and it would suck up water and dumps, which emptied into the bucket. I would then dump the bucket outside and fill it with fresh water to replace what I vacuumed out of the tank. That's all there is to it. This accomplished two things: it cleaned out the dumps and replaced some of the water with fresh, for a sparkling, clear tank.

Don't worry about cleaning the tank. If you remove the water and refill it with new water then your fish might die. We have had that problem. The poop just goes to the bottem and you don't notice it any more. Not until you clean it out when they die or if you have a pond that you can put the fish in the summer. But i suggest leaving the water the way it is. It is now their habitat and thats the way that they live.
