(staffy & lab)why have my dogs started to bite the furniture now?

my 3yo lab(*****) & 1yo staffy(dog) have ripped at my couch the last twice i've left them in alone only for short periods(under an hour) thy're settled in the house with the same people & even the same visitors, they'res been no change to there routine or circumstances so why the sudden change in behaviour? ( I HAVENT ACUATLY CAUGHT THEM DOING THIS SO I AM NOT TOTALLY CONVINCED AS TO WHO IS TO BLAME, BOTH OF THEM ACT GUILTY AS SIN WHEN THEY HEAR ME COME BACK IN THE HOUSE.)

Answers:
My first guess would be, not enough exercise. Try walking them before you leave them alone. Really tire them out.

My second guess, it could be separation anxiety. I would try leaving them with a "kong" an inexpensive toy that you fill with food to keep them occupied. It will help re-direct their chewing. These can be found in any pet supply store.

If that doesn't work, you may want to try "alone training," google it and you'll get a host of sources.

Babygates are also a good option, confine them to the kitchen or somewhere they can't get into any trouble!

Good Luck!
How about putting them in a crate while you're gone?
They are messing with your head!

Actually they have become bored. Try a rawhide for each of them.
They miss you. !

Sweet..

Leave them something of yours. IE old jumper , shoes etc to take there temper out on.
The smellier the better
Caught my 2 year old doberman doing that to the couch as well then found out she was hiding "stolen" things down in the cushions. She had a good collection of dirty socks, my sons action figures, the cats ball and bites of dogfood..stockpiling i guess. She now gets crated or outside in her kennel if i am going to be gone for very long. Sofa's are not cheap to replace.
Probably boredom, esp from the staffy,he's at that age. Leave them plenty of toys and 3 or 4 bones to go at. Also if they haven't made any mess when you return home make a huge fuss of them, really praise them up. I'd try maybe leaving the house for no more than 5 mins at a time several times a day for a wk,then build it up and see how that goes. If all else fails you might have to use a dog crate. Good luck!
I tried to teach my dog latin, and table manners, but then realised its a dumb animal.
Put them in a kennel outside.
Its an animal., Not a family member, people forget this.
dogs do not act guilty. Dogs have no sense of guilt. They act submissive and afraid because you are angry when you come home and see the damage.
I have a 2 year old pitt bull that had a VERY bad spout of doing what you just explained. We noticed that is was when he was home all day while we were at work and then would leave again in the night. We have since spent much more time with him (throwing a ball, running him etc.) and it has seemed to work. Your dogs are probably missing you.I would assume it is not boredom since they have each other to occupy them. Also, they have this stuff called AppleBitter.it comes in a cream form and also in a spray.dogs don't like the taste or smell and I am pretty sure it is safe to use on furniture (please check) It has worked for us to keep him from chewing on things.
has some one been rubbing meat on the furniture? seriously though its for attention get something that discourages this behaviour and don't give them good or negative reactions to this and like kids they should stop also dogs don't like citrusy smells maybe this can be used check your furniture first to see if it can be used also eucalyptus oil is a good deterrent for animals (and some humans)
New habits are relatively easy to stop so don't stress, you can fix this quickly. First of all, sort out the couch. Couch and seat stuffing is great fun for dogs to shred up. Make sure there are no loose bits the guilty party will be tempted to get going on. Spray the fabric/affected area with nasty tasting spray - hair freshner, special stuff from the pet shop, a fabric cleaner, deoderant etc - they all taste foul and will interrupt the behaviour.
When you go out make sure that you wait for the dogs to settle first. If you leave them agitated they'll get very anxious and be destructive. Leave them something interesting to do like plastic bottles stuffed with treats that will be hard to get out. This will keep their minds occupied and make sure they associate you going out with pleasure.
You can't think of any reasons for them to suddenly develop an anxiety problem when you leave them at home alone and as its only happened twice it may just be the result of over exuberance when you are not around to supervise.
Just make sure that you do not react to them when you return - no matter what the destruction. Dogs do not have the same kind of memory as us. They don't recall scenarios or sequences of events like we do but remember by association. For example, instead of thinking oh no I tore up the couch, I feel so bad, sorry dad/mum etc. They think oh no the couch is a mess, messy couch equals angry boss. Therefore it isn't fair to assume that they are feeling guilty and really understand why you are angry. The typical guilty signs of slinking around, averted eyes, ears back and droopy expressions are all submission signals to try and appease you. Unless you catch them in the act, they won't actually associate ripping up the couch with your displeasure. Be careful not to make them associate your return with your anger - that in itself can make dogs anxious and destructive when their owner goes out - they are scared of the return. Just ignore them until they settle again, then call them to say hi.
Follow these tips and the problem will be sorted.
Good luck!
