Is this cruel?
My best friend has two pet rats that i really can't stand, they really are horrible things and even he doesn't have any time for them so I am considering letting them go free outside one day while he is at work. They eat pretty much anything but I feel a bit worried that I'm being cruel. Will they survive? I live on a city full of them.

common sense
yes it is cruel. they are also not your pets, mind your own business
Dude,ur friend probally loves them and would be sad if they left.
But other wise y not? They would love it!
I had a pet rat many years ago, I loved him very much! My brothers though it would be funny to let it go in the fields near my house. I was very upset!
Please don't let them go, they are domestic pets and will not survive. Take them to the nearest pet shop or something.
leave them at the vets.
It probably is cruel. Because their so used to living indoors and having their food given to them. They don't have the skills to defend themselves and get their own food. You could put ads in the paper to give them away. But in order for that to work, you may have to conivince your friend that he doesn't really care for them anymore, and should give them to a loving home that would be more and happy to have them. But if the paper ad doesn't work maybe a relative like a neice, nephew. Hope this helps.
if they're out in the wild they breed more readily, so i wouldnt do that if i were you. in his care at least they're under control. besides, he likes them, disgusting though they may be, he finds some sort of comfort in having them, why do you want to rob your best friend of this. is it about him, or is it about you.?
my hubby has snails, so i feel almost hypocritical in saying the above, but i tried to get rid of them by putting salt in the water! it didnt kill them, and i felt almost relieved. i guess i dint put enough in, cause the slimy buggers are still around. i just asked him what would happen if i put salt in the water and he retorted by looking at me meaningfully and saying, well that would be extremely cruel! how would you like to be put in caustic soda, or acid! he ranks the bleeders as equal to me, and now when i told him that he said "oh what ARE you talking about"!
*fuming* maybe i'll feed him cyanide (his best friend's name is CYAN!).oh well, he did say it'd be less cruel squashing them.out to look for a hammer!
pet rats wouldnt last two minutes in the wild.. DONT
kinda-at least take em to a pet store
they would get eaten by the other rats.. please dont. they are not your pets.
Yeah, it's cruel. Pet rats are domesticated, so they don't know the ways of the wild. They may find enough to eat because they eat everything, but they are not predator savvy so will be picked off easily.
Plus you have no business letting his rats go free. Tell him to list them on Craig's list if he doesn't want them anymore, or bring them to shelter.
Or, find someone with a large snake and he can give them to the snake owner for food.
This is horrible. You are a terrible person.
Yes its cruel, they were born in captivity, they are used to being fed.
If you release them you are putting them at risk for starvation, and they will become prey to larger animals.
Plus you will be ruining a friendship.
so if you have children and noone can stand them, will it be ok by you if someone left them to go free when youre not around?
No, I dont think you should let the rats go. You dont live with them and its cruel. They are not used to it, there are cats around.
Its also sneaky of you to think of doing that behind his back because you dont like them sorry to say.
They will survive how do i know this because my son had a pet rat that was a little wild for me so one day i turn him loose. told my son he ran away 3or 4 days later my son ran in the house with the rat that was turn loose now caught and we went out and bought the rat from hell a nice little hamster town house and live happily ever after until it kill itself on the running wheel. true story believe it or not.
No, they should be offered to a good home for free or for a small fee. NOT AS FOOD FOR SNAKE'S! Do not set them "free" as they have become 'domesticated' and could not live in the wild. Yes, that would be cruel. Although rats in the wild are gross and spread disease, domesticated rats are really cool pets. Highly intelligent, also.
buy him a cat then its not ur fault
Yes it is very uncool. I have a dog that my boyfriend really doesn't care for but as much as he doesn't care for my dog he still knows how much the dog means to me. Turning domesticated animals out to fend for themselves is never a good idea.
Yes its cruel! What would ever make you think that was OK?
Could you imagine if you had a pet and one day came home to find that it was missing cuz your room mate or friend thought you couldnt care for it anymore? I would hurt somebody!
Dont be so selfish and think about your friends feelings.
If its really that big of an issue, why not talk to your friend about it and let them know your concerns?
Give them to someone who will take care of them..how would you like to be thrown out to fend for yourself you little ****.
Find a life and leave the pet rats alone, or talk to your friend about finding a new owner for them. Plenty of people love pet rats.
Leaving them loose in the city would be like letting a domestic dog loose with the dingo's in Australia. They will be eaten by the wild ones. A pretty grim way to go.
yes it is cruel, please don't let them go they are not your pets
Its none of your business what your mate does, and you'd be prosecuted for theft and animal cruelty if caught. The rats wouldn't love it, they'd be dead within days; either from a cat or the weather.
You're a bad friend. Bet you'd be the first to whine if your stereo got nicked from your house.
If you let them out invariably they are likely to be killed but surely that is really not the issue Find a new home for them then approach the subject diplomatically take him round to the new likely owners get his approval and off they go you will regret for the rest of your life that you have been deceitful I think deep down you know this
you are NOT a nice FRIEND to have with friends like you who the hell needs ENEMY,S if you dont like them neither does your mate take them to a pet shop they will take them from you or go and give them to the R S P C A
They would be killed and eaten by wild rats - domestic rats are a different creature altogether. The fancy rat has been bred to be a social and domestic pet.
I am sure that you must just be trying to wind us up. Rats make great pets - I never had my own but used to help care for the school pet rats and they were magic. So clean and intelligent.
People get very upset about potential cruelty to animals. Human baiting is cruel.
I don't think that you should do this. Yes, it's cruel.
It's not cruel if you let them loose near a dump that has loads of food scraps. They'll be just fine.
The cruel thing is what you'd be doing to your friendship. You might as well put that in the dump, too.
if they have a better life when you let them go no its not cruel. yes rats will survive anything.
that is mean they are domesticated and should'nt be let go
give them to your local humane society or lolly pop farm
they can't survive out there
don't do it when your friend is gone
if they are older they will die soon anyway
try talking to him
Yes, it's cruel. Period.
